I thought I was making this post in this thread, but discovered I had picked up an older one, so, here's the pix:
I built wheel well tool boxes to store all my retrieval gear etc. and incorporated a sliding tray in my pickup using a sheet of 3/4" plywood with a 2x4" lip around front & sides. Tray pulls out far enough to reach items in front but best to load heaviest items forward.
Fabricated two wheel wells to support front end with 3" rubber wheels. Notice silicon caulking around wheel wells to contain any blood and keep it out of truck bed. Tray easy to hose off when pulled out of bed w/front end on tailgate.
I fabricated a set of very low pillar blocks and turned shoulder on ends of a 2' length of 3/4" cold roll to make the roller which supports rear end of tray, but have since located some 5/8"
ROLLER BEARINGS @ Harbor Freight as well as 1" that would be much better; they're only .99 ea. or $1.99 for 1" and would be a lot quicker than building a roller!
To make my tray a lot more suited to load the large critters that I hunted, I added a boat trailer winch to front end of bed supported by a piece of 1/4x3x3" angle iron. Winch controls inside left tool box near tailgate.
Then added another sheet of 3/4" plywood with plastic "gliders" to make it easy to slide out. Mounted a matching set of door hinges on back of tray and front of this sheet and slip a 3/16" pin in each hinge to keep ramp from slipping while sliding heavy critters into back of truck. Just slide drawer out even with end of tail gate, attach ramp and you're ready to load 'em up.
Here is resulting ramp ready for use.
Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of loading any game using the ramp, but used it for a number of years and loaded lots of critters. The only drawback to the system is that you have to unload most of the bed to get a mature nilgai in the bed. Currently using my jeep w/boom for that duty as short wheelbase weaves into thick brush much better than the truck.
The drawer is still very useful when you have a bad back, however and in the event the jeep were not available can still handle the game retrieving duties very efficiently with the truck.
