Predator Xtreme magazine

Well they are for sure getting better, and I again am subscribing.

Randy I believe it was you that once told me that this was the only mag dedicated to only Predator Calling, and if we supported it, it might get a lot better. Well I'm doing my part. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Maybe with more subscribers the adds will cut back and the stories will increase?

But one thing is for sure if you think you can do better "Win Your Predator Xtreme Dream Job!!! Page 82"(The fallowing on page 82) Do you think you have the perfect editorial lineup for Predator Xtreme? Send us your Table of Contents, and we'll choose the best person to be our Issue Editor...Heck what ya got to lose? Worse case...your buddies here will bash ya. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Be safe,
Todd

Actually Randy, we've been monitoring this site for years. We monitor all the shooting sites. Between them, that give us the general mood of over 50,000 shooters, guiding my choice of material content. Unlike most magazines which try to influence the market with their contents, this lets me respond to the market, hopefully giving readers what they want as opposed to what we think they should have.

Of course, with any of the chats, you have a minority of hard core shooters and a whole pile of wannabes who do most of their shooting and hunting on the keyboard. But, I will say, PM is one of the best as far as having a bunch of hardcore, real predator hunters. I don't generally have much to say, just hang out listening, but you can be sure I'm paying attention.

Of course, I've only just begun, but watch for some serious changes to include moving up to 12 issues a year.

I personally do not see that much wrong with the mag... with the exception that I don't get 12 issues a year. It is kind of the more casual approach to a hunting magazine. It seems that every time I open a copy of Varmint Hunter, there is some guy that is shooting a custom round weapon a 1000yds. Or half of the mag is about reloading.

Reloading is only a small portion of pred and varmint hunting and for the 1000yd boys, well have fun with all of that.

I want intell on down to earth, realistic hunting scenarios and for the comman man in mind.

Ok, so Ralph is the new voice of Predator Xtreme Magazine? Let me start off by saying taking shots at a guys location and sig-line isn't exactly what I'd call professionalism. But hey, it's no biggie, I don't take things too seriously and perhaps you took the above "AGNTSA" picture as a shot at you or Predator Xtreme.

Let me assure you, it was nothing personal. This seems to be a topic with a vast and far-reaching history within PM circles. As such, it illicits the AGNTSA response shown above. Considering that you may or may not have been around during this topic's prime, here are a few links that will help you understand the aforementioned reaction..

"Merger??" Were my eyes deceiving me??

Predator Xtreme Magazine

Whatever happened to Predator Xtreme?

The Predator Xtreme Relationship

Wolverine, I was here for all that crap. It's old news. It's been beat to death. I'm sure the only reason you brought it up again was to make the magazine better. Or maybe to make Predator Masters a better place. Or maybe just to flog the dead horse once again. Give it a rest.

Predator Extreme/Varmint Masters WILL NEVER see another dime of my money. I got suckered into the VM "American Outdoorsman" promotion years back. I was supposed to get a years subscription to two of their magazines. Well, Vulcan Outdoors did not send me the two magazine subscriptions for a year. In fact, the time that I did receive the subs was much less than that. Mail went unanswered and phone calls were a big waste of time and money. Fool me once, shame one you. You won't get a second chance. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif MI VHNTR

I totally agree with you, that's why I posted the AGNTSA pic that Ralph seems to have taken offense to. I was merely explaining why I did so. I'm done.

Tried to avoid jumping into this topic, but here goes. I've been on the board long enough to remember, though I did not post much back then.
I haven't been real crazy about the magazine, but I am willing to give a new editor a chance and see what happens. The reality of the outdoor magazine business is that though readers are important, the advertising is paying the rent. So outdoor writers MUST hawk products. It is what they do now. I wrote for some of the magazines for about 15 years in the 80's and 90's, and that is when editors decided that what readers want was something that could be read in 10 minutes or less and lots of snappy color photos. An early editor of one of the deer huntings mags taught me that to sell to him, I had to use and promote the products of the vendors he was trying to sell advertising to. One of the biggies, Jim Carmichel recently wrote about how Remington turning out loads that make a 30/06 into a .300 Savage was the greatest thing since smokeless powder. Jack O'Connor and Warren Page did it to, but low-key, not so in-your-face. Only a few magazines like "The Varmint Hunter Magazine" still publish some indepth how to articles. But they are not on the newstands trying to grab the attention of the "wantabees". So lets give Ralph a chance and see if he can find a balance between those who want "quick reads and pretty pixs" and those who want a bit more.

It seems that most don't really mind the ads as much as the lack of content. If you've gotta sell ad room to pay for the thing, fine, just sell one or two more to pay for the extra pages it'd take to fit more articles in.

W@W and others - Everytime PX is mentioned the issue of excessive advertising (edit for spelling) and articles designed almost solely to promote products has come up. After all you'd have to be stupid or a fool not to see it (advertising is more bothersome to some than it is to others, if you don't mind it, then you are likely to be relatively happy with the PX format, I'm not calling you stupid or a fool /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ). But after a while constantly beating on anyone associated with PX seems excessive and almost pointless. I'm sure they know how we feel about the issue of advertising, especially when taken to the point where the term "advertising whore" is not an inappropriate description. I believe that they are producing a better magazine than they used to and I'd bet that the new people will do even better. One thing to keep in mind, there is a very long lead time for these publications so we might not see any real changes for quite a few issues.

One more thing. I would like to ask you fellas to try to leave the past in the past. Thanks!

MJM

I know they have improved the mag a great deal. But it's still not one I would subscribe too. Only about half of the issues grab my attention on the newstand shelf.

If anyone thinks about it at all, advertisers help us pay our bills here as well. We need their help and so does a magazine. How many of you actually mention the call or rifle you were using in one of the HOM stories? Isn't that advertising as well?Jimmie

Kind of an expensive rag too. What is it $5.99
U.S. $6.99 in Canada.I subscribed because If you Buy two issues off the newstand You can get a years worth if you suscribe. Can't bring myself to pay 6 bucks for a mag. There is a whole lot of advertisers in that mag you would think they could be a little more reasonable.

I've subscribed for several years now and I look forward to every new issue. I enjoy the new reloading section. I don't care for all the advertising though. And I liked Bill Bynum also. I thought in the Knight and Hale predator hunting videos he acted like an all right guy, and I liked reading his articles. Guess I am deffinately in a minority on this one.

You're not in the minority.
I just renewed my subsription. It gets better with each issue. I like the new changes coming down the road.

The mag that I'm having doubts about is The Varmint Hunter. I just got my renewal notice. The price keeps going up. It seems to be getting more and more techy for me. There are less and less interesting articles to read. I'm not a technical person (Hey! I went to art school) and $30 is a lot to pay for just a few calling articles.

Well, that my 2 cents.

Gunsmoke!!

I guess the trouble is "Ya can't please all of the people all of the time!'' At least neither one of them does anything on white tail deer!!
I sent a letter ( yes I can write) to Field and Stream asking them if they were aware there were other game species in the world other than white tail deer.
Any one out there a fan of Fur -Fish -and Game magazine?
I really like the diversity and the trapping info is good for tips on yotes and fox.
The Jan. issue has articles on winter grouse hunting ,rabbit hunting, yote calling, winter crow calling, and a great piece on the first guy who was issued the first license to guide in Alaska. If ya wonder what the hide of an 1800 lb. brown bear looks like heres your chance!
Also has a Fur Market report.
Also a great photo of a black yote a fella in KY took.
Not stupid money either. One year ( 12 issues) for $17 bucks.
No I don't work for, write for, own an interest in or get any free gear from them.I just like the magazine.
Some of you men more than likely knows all about them. But for folks that have never taken a look at it, it's worth leaning on the magazine rack and paging through for a look see.

Amen to that, O.H. I am going to have to check out Fish,Fur and Game. It would seem that I was grossly misinformed about that mag from the way you talk.

Swift One,
Can't hurt to take a free look at the magazine rack.Be interested in your take on it. No info on wildebeest hunting in Africa in it but I haven't called one of those in ,in years. How about you? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Overly Hackled, That is the one mag I get on a regualr basis. I love FFG. If it wasn't for coyotes I'd be out working on the winter catfishing info. I've always been a fan of Judd Cooney's writing and calling info as well. Jimmie
