Predators with bows

Who here’s shot a predator with a bow? I’ve passed on a couple bear, sows with cubs, had coyotes in range but had a shotgun instead. Never had the opportunity to shoot a lion. Thinking this year I wanna try for a Predator with my recurve bow.

I bow hunted from about 1956 to 1972. I killed a number of deer, many rabbits and a few pheasants in the air but never had an opportunity to take on a predator.

Last year I bought a little compound bow to try for coyotes and have a range set up inn the back yard and am learning to shoot again, maybe this season will put a coyote in front of the bow for me. There are a lot of things to re-learn with a compound, they are not as forgiving as a straight or recurve bow.

I've shot a badger a bear and a black back jackal with my bow. Never had an opportunity with my bow for a coyote. Oh and missed a bobcat years ago.

I shot a couple of coyotes as a kid with a bow, but they were both random dumb luck cases while deer hunting. Cut the tail clean off a fox with a broadhead in a similar situation. Kept me eyes out for that tailless fox for awhile but never ran into him again.

Coyotes,Red fox, badgers, a couple skunks odd feral cats that happen by. Crows, rabbits, squirrels, grouse and a few pheasant(ground swatted). The bears I count as big game.

This is how I started predator hunting. Best success was sitting high and using an e caller. Hard not get busted when drawing back.

I've killed many coyotes with a bow, but all of them were while hunting deer. Quite a few were called in with lip squeaks or a small digital call that I keep in my day pack but I have never purposely set out after them with a bow.

I've let a bear cub and a coyote pass. Both during early deer bow seasons.I just didnt want to screw up my deer setups. It paid off with deer taken from each of them within a few days.

I hunt with a longbow, I have taken a couple of mountain lions, a black bear, two coyotes and a wolf with it. The lions were treed using friends and family hounds, all the others were taken by mouth calling, on the ground, fair and square. Bow hunting predators can be a serious rush. Good luck!

That sir is impressive!! I think I'd be looking for a new pair of pants after I called in a wolf with a long bow!

Its really no different than hunting anything else. Certainly the same fundamentals apply, miles of walking all alone in heavy timber where nobody can hear you scream , nerves of steel and deadly accurate shooting.

Amazing story! I've spent my life chasing bucks with a compound so I know enough to realize I can't fully understand how difficult that would be. Epic

I’ve killed many coyotes with a bow over the years, never while hunting coyotes. It always happened hunting deer or elk.
Maybe a dozen or so from a tree stand and maybe a half a dozen while on the ground.

I think the most unusual bow kills I ever had was one evening many years ago I was sitting in a tree stand waiting for deer. The tree and spring was located in thick cedar trees. I could hear a ruckus out in the trees it sounded like a pack of coyotes chasing something. It went on for a few minutes, then a mulie fawn ran into sight. There was a shallow little pond about 30 feet across and maybe 8” deep with tall grass around it. The fawn was very small and on a dead run, it plunged into the pond hoping for Saftey. There were as I remember 5 coyotes spread out in pursuit. There maybe have been more but it got kinda busy about then. The closest coyote on his tail was on the fawn almost immediately. Lots of noise, the fawn bleating, thrashing in the water as the coyote was working on the fawn. I drew back and arrowed the coyote. It yipped and ran into the trees. Another two came at the same time, there was so much going on the coyotes didn’t realize they were dying. Ended up getting arrows in three of them but only found two.
I assume the fawn never made it but it hobbled off after things calmed down.

It was pretty western for a few minutes and it’s something I’ve never forgot

Oh! Also there was a video on the sight maybe a year ago of someone shooting a triple with a bow from a tree stand. It was amazing to do that and actually get it on film. If anyone can find the link and repost it, those who didn’t see it will be highly entertained. I watched it many times and was really impressed with the feller that did it.
