Prefered LIVE traps

Next year I can extend my area of trapping if I use live traps with permission from the land owner. The areas will be for raccoon only. Does anyone have a specific brand the prefer. I know from looking already that there are several different types. With no experience in using live traps, I'm looking for some advice. Thank you
 
I have a Havahart trap that is 10"wide 12" tall and 36" long and its does a pretty good job at catching bobcats but something flipped it over and got out a couple of times and Im guessing it was a raccoon.I also have a trap called a Little Giant that is 16"Wide 16"tall and 42" long.I bought the big trap too late and didnt get to use it but my friend has one just like it and he caught a 35 pound coon is his so apparently those traps are to heavy for them to flip over.Just to be safe Im going to stake my traps to the ground next year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
 
Nothing wrong with dog proof at all. I just don't want any dogs to be able to tangle with a trapped coon. The live trap seems like it would be a better barrier between the two. I might be able to combine the two. If you could give some tips on dog proof that would be great. Alot less to carry to walk in only areas only with dog proof. Probably stick to live traps near residency and go dog proof further away. Are almost all live traps a galvanized finish. Something a little less shiny to the human eye is also something I'm looking for. I just don't like to advertise whats going on. I check'd on the havahart yesterday at Fleet Farm ($38.99), didn't seem to bad for the single door in a coon size. Thanks for the help everyone
 
I make my own and use speed dip on them,gets the shine off.
OKrattler, stake your trap down at opposing corners.

I use the live traps where I might pick up a female bob, you always have bobs to run with the dogs & trap if the females are still around.
 
tractor supply co. has a dill on three live traps[3 different sizes] for $30. not bad traps, i bought a set last year.
 
Fleet Farm in MN has havaharts on sale. Bought 2 live traps size is 32"L x 10"W x 12H. Single doors. Cost was a little over $30 for each compared to reg. price of 38.99. I hope they work this coming fall and winter. Anyone ever go with havaharts. Seems to be of good quality.
 
I have the havahart 2 door cage traps and have taken a bunch of coons with them. after 6 years of service the pans are in need of being redone, Put back on, and a couple of the handles came off, other then that, they have held up.

either habor frieght or Northern has collaspable cage traps, that a friend of mine uses in Mass. and they catch everying thing with them, they say the collaspable traps hole up to fishers. might be something to look into, and they run about $30 each.

a couple of tips for using cage traps:

1) put hardware cloth on the back and back half of the cage so the coon can't reach in and try to still your bait.

2) start eating pudding and applesause out of those plastic cups that they sale as a 4 or 6 pack at the grocery store. they make a great bait holder, and if the coon chews them up. they are cheap enough to replace, I pack my lunch to work and I have a cup of pudding and applesause or friut every day. take a zip lock bag with ya and put them in it when your done instead of throwing them away. in a few shorts weeks, you'll have more then you think you'll need /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I have a friend who has some nuiscance coons on his property. After checking local laws to see if possible to to trap out of season, I would like to try out the live traps I have and get the coons relocated.
 
I have used Safe Guard traps for years and they have out lasted and out performed the other brands.

I always staked my traps to prevent them from being rolled and to stop any movement of the traps as the animal entered.
 
Well i built a trap for coons and such. It measures 15 x 15 x 36. I have a cat that is bugging me at the house so he is going to be my test subject. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I wouldn't mine seeing others traps. Mine is pretty cude. It was kinda an experiment. I'm going to do some refining on the next one.
 
the live traps with the spring hinge doors will stop the door from opening if the trap is turned over. potato chips especialy doritos are exelent bait I laughed when I first herd it but it realy works you can get old bags out of date from the potato chip man usualy free. I coon hunted for about 15 years and caught coons to train pups this worked well for me. It also helps if you jam the trap between 2 small trees and pile brish on the back of the trap so they will go strait to the door path of least resistance. Be sure no linbs interfer with the rod that trips the door.
