primer pocket question?

while resizing some brass, I noticed that some of the primer pockets looked like the primer had been punched out, but it looked like the outside wall of the primer was left inside the primer pocket. Any one else ever experienced this? what is the cause?

+1 - Sounds like you must have some military or crimped brass and the casings need to be swagged to remove the drimping piece you are making reference too. Is it PMC brass?

What brand of cases and where did you get them??

If you are not mistaking the crimp...

... then what you have is called "Ringing" and is caused by the top of the primer being pushed off, and the sides being left in the pocket.

There is no way to remove the ring.

The brass is for my 204 ruger. it is stamped FC 204 ruger on the bottom. It appears that this brand is the only ones Im having this problem with.

Since you are not using military cases, then you do have "ringing", and it is the body of the primer that you are seeing.

There is nothing you can do to fix it.

Otherwise, it would have to be a case of the main part of the primer splitting off in the case...

I always believed that the plating (what looks like nickel) on the primers was done to prevent the two otherwise similar metals of the cartridge brass and the primer from sticking like this, as I could think of no other reason to make them all nice and shiny and silver.

I too have had this happen a couple times, and I do not know what causes it.

I also have that "ring" inside of my brass at times. I have found this mostly in my 6.8spc cases by Hornady.

I use a deburring tool to grind out that "ring."

It helps my primers seat much smoother too.

can you post a pic?
