primer pocket tight after swager...

got my hands on some once fired lake city brass. bought the rcbs primer pocket swager tool, I read the directions multiple times and after using it the primer pocket is still tight! the only question I have for the die is when the ram is all the way up, should the shell holder( the insert with the little nub) touch the guide rod or should there be a little bit of space?

I tried with a little bit of space and with it touching and the primers are just not seating like they should. another area that might be my problem is I am using my press(redding t7) to prime. the primer cup is big enough to hold a large primer so when I prime with small primers they move around a bit and can be a pain to line up correctly on my down stroke to actually prime a case. not sure if that makes sense to some of you but I don't know how else to explain it. I just ordered a rcbs hand primer the one that takes the strips to see if me press priming with a large primer cup on the press is really my problem or not. but....any advice or thoughts would be appreciated!

that is not a guide rod. that is what pushes the case down on the piece that enters the primer pocket. that is how it works.

Two things:
1) get the instructions from RCBS for adjusting the primer pocket swaging tool, and follow them. If you just guess at it, you will experience the results you have had so far.

2) there is no way you should be trying to prime small primer cases with a large primer cup. Get the tool that holds the small primer; your results will vastly improve.

Not familiar w/the Redding press, but, you should have received two different priming assemblies with your press; one for large primers and another for small primers. It is necessary to change them out when switching from one size primer to the other.

Edit to add picture:

Looks similar to Dillon. The priming assy. may be just the priming pin, cup and spring (circled) or could be complete sliding assembly the pin screws into and should have been included with your press.

Yes.
If you adjust it too short the swager won't go deep enough.
If you adjust it too long you'll bend the alignment rod.
