Primer Popping Issue [pics included.]

RoscoeT, answer is simple, you have an enlarged firing pin hole in your bolt. Many very good gunsmiths can remedy this problem, or send the same pics to the factory and see what they have to say.

I used a Howa action for a 17 Mach 4 and had the same issue.

Good luck!

Yes, if I understand the term you've used. It seems like it is raised out a touch like the edges of an impact crater. You can actually catch your fingernail on the dimple.

Is that normal? What would that indicate?

the cratering by itself can also be attributed to an over size firing pin hole in the bolt face. As mentioned the primers are not flattened on the edges so i don't think you have a high pressure problem. If the pin hole is to big and pin protrusion to much it could cause the piercing and cratering you are seeing.

I build a 257wby mag on a 98 Mauser action that craters the primers. It has been checked over twice by two different smith's both have said it is the pin hole. It doesn't pierce primers just crater's them.

Just throwing it out there, but with the current primer situation, could they have used Remington 6 1/2's?? I know its thinner cupped and should function normally in a bolt gun. Butt..

jason...good ques if ammo had been handloaded...but this has all been commercial - even overseas manuf - ammo...
roscoe...any contact with Wby?

wildcat arms...i may be wrong but i believe all rem primers have the "brass" coloration...its been a long time since i've had any 6 1/2's...i luv the 7 1/2's.... there hav been lots of discussion re: amer primer construction but haven't seen any info on overseas primers...with wolf primers gain'n popularity some outfit needs to evaluate them...other than they go "pop".
