Primos Hot Dog Howler

Recently I purchased a Hot Dog Howler. I have watched Randy's tapes and listened to his CD, and practised a lot, but I just can't seem to get this call to sound like a howling coyote. I find the call too raspy and growly, as opposed to Randy's calling which sounds much purer, more like a siren. Do you fellas have any experience with this call? What am I doing wrong? I have tried different pressures with both teeth and lips. In the CD, it is recommended to be close to C and D on the reed, but I find when I am near here, the sound is way too deep. This call was not cheap, and is not easy to use, I am seriously thinking about sending it back. Any comments?

I have one and found that it takes more air than some other howlers. It also didn't work well in real cold weather. I think the reed must be kept warm for it to work well. I ended up with a few commercial howlers until I finally got a custom one. You can save alot of money in the long run by buying a custom howler from one of our call makers.

I can echo everything Weasel said. I call it an air hog. Temperature sensative. I was able to produce good sound in warm weather. When I had trouble I tried turning the reed over, and it got much worse. The lil dog is different, it is easy to use and is effective. The critter calls are pretty good for the price. Ultimately I too ended up getting a custom howler from Cronk, What a howler. Have not tried any other customs Yet! But I will. It's addictive and my wife loves it when I howl. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Unlike the other two replies, I have had better luck using less air to blow the call, when doing howls. You have to really concentrate on using only air from your diaphragm, and not using air from your mouth, that would puff your cheeks out. Tilt the call up at about a 45 degree angle, and use your teeth to hold the reed down tight.

Ttebbe has good instructions on blowing a howler here

here's what I think! BUY custom calls! in general they have a much better sound and most of these guys will work with you to see that you can do it right!
try that with a store bought!
If you are going to buy factory type calls I would recomend haydels,if you had a problem at least you would be able to speak with him and figure out what is going on!

I do all the things that tlbradford already said (diaphragm, teeth, tilt) and I really like the Hot Dog. I also have the Red Desert Howler (I believe the HD is just a mimic RD) and I can get sound I am happy with from the HD and NOT from the Red Desert. I can't quite figure that one out!

I think it is always hard to judge what your howls sound like. You are hearing them from 1 foot away compared to hundreds of yards as a coyote would. I have had people listen to my howls and say that they sounded fine from a Hot Dog. I am going calling this weekend and will be using my Hot Dog. We will see how it does in the field and this will be my first calling trip this season.

The Crit R Calls are good too, as somebody said. The SongDog is a fun call to use...really versatile.
