Ive been playing woth the call for a few days now and I have the barks and yips and kiyi calls down pretty well. I cant however for the life of me get a howl to sound halfway like it should. Does anyone have any tips on howling off this call? Or does it sound differently to me then a bystander perhaps?

Ive heard guys use it and it sounds fantastic, but Im struggling hardcore.

Help!

Thanks guys.

I am no means a expert on howling but I tried the Primos Hot Dog and didn't like it. I eventully sent it back to the store. I thought it was hard to blow and it didn't sound right to me also. I purchased the Little Dog a couple of years ago and use it from time to time. I have been buying calls on this site from the custom call makers and use them all the time now. Easy to blow, love the sounds I get, plus I love how they look.

Just my two cents....

Before you give up on the call try tilting the end of the call upwards and blowing, it should make a difference. I have alot of howlers that are easier to blow but tilting the Hot Dog up made the difference for me.

RiverValley is right on,the big mistake that first time howlers make is not manipulating the call enough, start out straight out then end up with the call touching your nose.
Also get Randy Andersons "Mastering the Art" DVD well worth it and it will give you tips for making other sounds with the the howler.

I got mine in a package deal along with the video for like 15 bucks. Practice with Randy while he's calling on the video. With the reed (white piece) up place in your mouth and angle it slightly upward. I use my teeth on the reed and close my lips over it. Practice in the car too when you're just driving around. The hot dog is not the best caller, but it works. It may sound like a kazoo, but try and fool some friends with it. If you can fool them from the other end of the parking lot, it's working.

The best tip I can suggest is just to go ahead and put it away in a drawer somewhere and get one of the custom howlers from one of the sponsors here. That will save you a lot of aggravation. I messed around for several months trying to get it to sound right. I even sent it back to Primos and they sent me another one but it was no better.
The Lil Dog sounds good, is easy to blow and gets used quite often.

Check out the howlers from Tony Tebbe. Very easy to blow and sounds good too.

+1 I agree with Houser!

The hot dog I don`t think is as good as some of the custom calls, but with some practice I made it sound somewhat good.I like the way you can get different ranges on it.I started with using just the tip with my teeth and lips for a higher pitch. Then moving up the reed for a more deeper raspier howl.Oh and like they say hold it up at a angle toward your nose and don`t be afraid to let it rip!

I have messed with mine while driving. I now have no hearing left. Just kidding. It is loud if nothing else. I think it is a little harder to hold a note with compared to others I have tried.

I have a lot of calls, but could never get that one to work. It came in a three pack. The Hot Dog will not howl well. I tilted it, sanded the reed to make it thinner-no go. The white mouthpiece won't even make a sound. The green mouth piece is excellent, especially at softer distress, female howl and kiyi. I put the Hot Dog and white mouthpieces away. Shouldn't be that hard to use a howler. I'd look elsewhere.

Take a deep breath cause it takes alot of wind. Instead of sliding your teeth down the reed try simply slightly increasing preasure on the reed with you teeth and not sliding.

I agree it is not a custom call, but mine is starting to grow on me.I learned to tilt it upward and it seemed to help if I start off blowing with little pressure and work your way up slow with pressure

I own all of the Primos predator calls except one, however, I can answer your question. The trick is, to have it at about a 45 degree angle and also to use only your teeth on howls, not your lips. Another key is to be blowing hard enough. If you don't blow hard enough in the caller, it will not sound right. I had the Little dog howler for a while, and it is much easier to learn, because you don't have to blow as hard.

Is this your first Primos call? Because if it is I would recommend returning it and getting the Little Dog first. Learn the L.D, once you get the hang of it, then get the Hot dog and it will be much easier for you to learn.

It takes lots of practice and eventually overtime you will get the hang of it. Keep watching the videos by Randy Anderson. I had to watch his movie about 5 to 10 times with practice before I really got the hang of it.

Remember, it also does distress sounds to, so learn those to. I have hunted coyotes for the last few years using Primos predator calls and have called in 5 or so coyotes, but none of them are dead.

I had better luck once I took the black tube off of the red mouth piece. It must change the harmonics or something, because I can howl much better without it attached.

Most hunting shops that carry calls with have a whole section devoted to calls for various critters from duck calls to predator calls. Primos calls are easily found. Or shop online right here.

Look in the Custom Calls section. I have one of Tony Tebbe's production howlers and it's the easiest by far, and I have tried all the Primos howlers.
