Mine works fine other than the recommended deep howl is a bit higher on the reed. (d on the instructions is to low for a yote) I think that may be why when some were saying to lean it up forces you to be a bit higher up the reed getting closer to the correct tone. I also slide on my top lip with my teeth under my lip (if that makes any sense) as I can't get the right tone with my teeth on the reed

I agree that a custom howler works great. Bearmanric makes a nice cow horn version as do others. I use and like the Red Desert Howler by Dan Thompson as a very good production howler.

Ok so after some more toying...I got the young make challenge and female invitational sounding ok. However the old male howl from "D" to "C" sounds like a duck no matter what. Or a coyote with a cold as I keep telling my partner lol!

This one is right on. I've had the call for a couple of years and can make it sound just fine. If you can get out on the tip and control the tone through reed and air pressure you'll get a much more consistent howl. It's when you start sliding up and down the board that the reed wants to torque and you'll get pitch breaks and skips.

I've had that problem too. I just don't even try to howl in that range. Sounds like my son's kazoo. But I can get good higher pitched howls out of it. That d range I use to make rabbit sounds or if you will, dying goose sounds. I've had days where the one thing I forget IS THE DAMNED FOXPRO!!!! And the one and only call I have is the hot dog (dusty and under the bench seat). You become a pro with the hot dog on a day like that.

Well I have the hot dog and the dog catcher (i dont use the rubber piece b/c it sucks), plus the hand squeaker. We also have a Johnny Stewart Predator 1. Funds as well as simply not needing a $400 call make it my personal best option lol.

I think that tomorrow night Im going to use the female invitation along with some barks and yips. Then let the distress calls begin.

We're going to try and setup on a high grass bluff that overlooks a nasty frozen swamp on one side and some thick briars on the other.

Last time we tried the woods and failed, so perhaps well try more open ground or very very open hardwoods to keep the downwind very visible.

Eevntually we'll put a combo together and put something on the ground.

If what you guys are talking about is the pitch and skip on the hotdog caller. It is made that way to have the sound change when howling. If you think I'm mistaken watch the dvd "The truth about calling coyotes".

I was just saying today how I spoiled myself. My first few calls were customs. More recently I have tried some of the commercial calls and just haven't been satisfied.

Check out Kerry Carver's rabid rabbit. It's easy to learn on and makes great distress and female/juvenile howls. I think I use that call more than the others combined.

I really like my Lil Dog & KI Yi and they produce.
The Hot Dog is a temperature sensitive air hog. Although I applaud your drive to modify the Hot Dog successfully, I took the lazy route and replaced the tone board with a Yellerdog version and happy now.
