For a cheaper choke try a jellyhead or a carlson's ported. As much as kicks cost they should be rated for hevi-shot. Anyone who would buy a lead only choke for that kinda money must not be thinking clearly. You pay a premium price for a choke that is old fasion. A carlson will do anything a kicks will do for alot less money and they are rated for hevi shot. For the price of a kicks you can get a much better choke such as a pure gold or an indian creek.
I'll reply to this since it seems directed toward me - again. I use Kick's and shoot Winchester Supreme High Velocity plated lead #5's in 3" .12 gauge 1 3/4 ounce. I have killed gobblers cleanly at 50+ yards with that set-up through my Benelli M1S90 3" .12 gauge semi-auto. How much further do you need to shoot one?
If it is "old fashioned" you are worried about, then the most modern loads aren't Hevi-Shot material anyway. The newest Federal, Winchester, and Remington turkey loads have softer, more pliable shot that is rounder than Hevi-Shot, more barrel and choke friendly than Hevi-Shot, and is as heavy, or heavier than, Hevi-Shot. All shoot very well through Kick's chokes.
I would actually question what makes one choke better than another? Pure Gold has never impressed me. I've shot them. I hear a lot of stuff about Indian Creek, they have a big advertising department making lots of waves. There is a very, very, well known big shot hunter that is featured on all those T.V. shows and videos we see, that actually calls my county his home. He doesn't live here anymore, but he does come visit often and shoots on our gun club range. This is one of those dudes that hunts the world on television and has people throwing free stuff at him for his endorsement. I've known him for years, way back when he was just a construction worker that loved to turkey hunt. The last time I was at the range patterning my guns he was there sighting in a muzzleloading rifle for an upcoming hunt that was to be filmed. He was disgusted with the performance of his load and we talked about possible problems with the mounts, scope, ect. Conversation turned around to chokes and shotguns. As it turns out he is also a huge fan of Kick's chokes. He has shot them all and confided in me that he felt the Indian Creek chokes weren't as good as the hype. I haven't shot an Indian Creek, so I cannot comment other than to say that this guy has shot a drawer full of them, and, I trust him. Another example would be Rhino chokes that cost a crisp $100 bill, yet, it is widely known that a Jellyhead costing 1/3 that shoots Hevi-Shot just about as well. Well enough that the pellet count is nearly identical. Dad's old plain jane Hastings choke from his Mossberg 500 shoots pretty close to my Kick's/Benelli combo. Not quite as well, but close enough for 40 - 45 yard work. We all have our preferences, different experiences, idea's, and brand loyalties.
Buy what you want and shoot what you want, but be careful of blanket statements and generalizations. Shotguns are finicky enough that nothing much can be taken as a "given." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
