Brent,
Until you seal the hole you'll continue to have animal problems of one kind or another.
I saw a show recently that said squirrels (all species) do 5 billion dollars worth of damage to homes and crops in this country, try not to have to pay your share.
First you have to make sure you have evicted everyone, as mentioned a dead squirrel above your bedroom is not a good thing. "Honey, what's that brown spot on the ceiling?"
Here's what the pro's use. You can buy em for about ten bucks, or make one (and a cage) with wire from the hardware store.
Get a ladder and climb up there in the evening, after the squirrels are in, screw the one way trap head onto the wall over the hole.
A cage with the same type of gravity door can be attached to the one on the wall with some bailing wire, and the offending squirrels can be relocated, or sent to heaven.
That way they don't do even more damage trying to break back in, to get to the food they have stored in your house.
Make sure to wear heavy gloves to remove the cage from the wall, and use a piece of bailing wire to hold the cage door shut (if the cage tips over the door opens).
After you're sure no more squirrels are in your house, and they have no other ways in and out, seal the hole.
