This photo shows the ATN Aries NV Gen 3 scope on the Condor PCP Air Rifle. Yeah, it is overkill but Rats make a nice off season source of shooting.
After a VERY short time it became obvious this is not a set up that you want to hold and use for scanning for a very long time at all. It is just to heavy of a setup.
Again, and with the previous success with the Luna laser, I contacted Blind Hunters Supply in Wisconsin and he suggested a hand held NV device in Gen 1 from Luna. He gave me several options and I ultimately settled on the Binoculars with head gear. The unit arrived in under a week, again drop shipped direct to me from Luna. It was well packed and included a carry case for the head gear and Binoculars.
The head gear
Used it for 30 minutes this evening and it was comfortable to wear and easy to adjust for best fit.
The mounts
The binoculars mount to the head gear with a slide type mount with adjustable fitting and locking screw that you can work easily with your fingers. The mount allows a flip up motion to get it out of the way and use the NV scope.
Focus
Focus is a combination of Objective and ocular adjustments. 20 yards is very sharp and deteriorates with distance. Actually not a focus problem but more of a resolution issue of the Gen 1. once the ocular focus is set it need not be changed for different distances. Just adjust the ocular focus.
Construction
Appears to be built very good. Solid construction.
IR light source
built in and fixed focus.
Range
The unit is a 1x magnification and with the Led IR on it probably has an effective range for EASY identification of 100 Yards. Very effective under 50 yards. AH, BUT WAIT. if you read the other review on the LUNA laser I mentioned the mounts don't fit picatinny. But they DO fit the binoculars and will extend the range considerably maybe out to 200 yards. (now if I can only find the mount after I mistakenly figured I couldn't use them and set them aside) However you can't use the headgear and the laser at the same time as they use the same mounting slot. The laser will fit snuggled in the middle bottom of the binoculars with a heavy rubber band.
Without the LED on and overcast skies reflecting ambient light of the countryside outside of the city lights it still did a good job
Summary
Good points
Small and light weight. See pic below
solid construction
comfortable to use
separate on off buttons for LED and NV
Not so good points
has a bit of a fish eye effect
Limited range of clarity
Different batteries than the Laser.
Should have a laser slide mount on the bottom,
My opinion
Again, Better than I expected. Excellent value for the money. great for scanning until you see a target. Would be a great addition to a two man predator team. The shooter keeps his night vision waiting for the nudge of the spotter.
