Public lands and long range shooting

I know out here you can go there & shoot any time of year no matter what is in season UNLESS its posted otherwise.
 
I love my "private" public land 1000 yd range! You can shoot on public land around here anytime unless posted otherwise, which is only near trailheads or occupied dwellings.

Same here. They only close it when its dry as a popcorn fart!
 
In Kansas, unless I'm mistaken, there are certain public hunting areas that do not allow "target shooting," which is considered to be any shooting that's not linked to hunting activities. I got ran off a spot once while shooting blue rock for that reason - maybe he was just being a d!ck, maybe that's actually the law, all I know is that he kicked me out.
 
I'm fortunate to have a lot of dry lake around me. The one I use has a road for the railroad tracks I use it to get out. It's 7 miles long by 2.5-3 miles wide on the north side of the tracks. Back in the day the military used it for ordinance runs. I find strings of 50 cal pretty often
 
first and foremost this is very dangerous. you don't know who is out there walking around or what animal is out there walking around and you want to sling bullets all over the place.

in Ohio target shooting is prohibited on public land because people use this land to fish, hunt, hike etc and because its DANGEROUS AND SHOULDNT BE DONE! I would highly advise looking into your states laws on this instead of asking guys on the internet.
 
I like to do summer shooting in the mountains here..

We have plenty of places that have pockets of pine tree's and then open grass area's that go out as far as you could hope to try and shoot.
There are plenty of places to practice the down angle shoots as well.

Best part is that you are sitting in the shade, nice and cool. (important here in the summer, it's another 110+ kind of day here, and my pool(without heater) is upto 88 degree's) is warmer than some peoples day time highs.

I'm from Oklahoma too and out of the few public land properties I have hunted there have always been signs that say target shooting is prohibited. 
 
Laws vary by locale, I'd ask your local LE. Long range on flat ground with poor visibility would be a bad idea. Unless I have a positive backstop, no shooting. A skip can travel forever (exaggeration of course). Frangible bullets I don't worry about, they're dust even on a skip. But hunting etc bullets are a concern for me.

Maybe i missed a post, but who was talking about slinging lead all over the place? Or breaking laws?

I guess Ohio is a small place, we have miles and miles of public lands out here. That is all i hunt or fish in, and when I hunt in them there are times I don't see another soul all weekend.

I also don't see why target shooting is very dangerous on public land. Just cause you don't own it doesn't mean you can't be safe, use mounds and back drops..

I know bullets are magical things, but they just don't fly forever. (that only happens on face book when they talk about Nosler bullets) The trajectory of a bullet that has hit something or bounced off something is a lot worse than normal trajectory paths, the drop on those is dramatic.

Wait.. I just ran out to my loading bench and checked under it for those evil bullet monsters that switch normal bullets with ones that fly for miles and travel at 5000+fps, no such present was left for me.
Does anyone have any they would like to sell, assuming they come with a double your money back guarantee of course. (holly nanny state for pete's sake)

I don't ask people from all over the country for legal advice. aint nothing like well mr GW some guys on PM said it was okay. sorry that I ask questions to help me out. I thought that's what this sites about?

its dangerous because others use this land too. no one said anything about bullets going forever or anything to that affect. I was just trying to guide this guy in the right direction. I was bow hunting a rather large public land area last year and had some idiot shooting in the field into the woods. I have also been fishing there and had someone shooting in the fields. bullets ricochet and after that no clue where its going. what's to say that dirt mound your shooting into doesn't have someone walking behind it and then they cross over it? other people don't know what your doing out there so how would they know your shooting? I wouldn't expect someone to use public wildlife areas as their own private shooting range. also never said anything about anyone breaking laws. I said check your state laws on this. all wildlife areas in Ohio are posted no shooting or you will be cited and its also in our regs book. just telling the guy check the law instead of asking people their opinion of the law and get in trouble. why does everyone take things so serious and get all upset about things. geeezzzz

I don't think some people realize how open Arizona is. Where I shoot. There is no chance a speeding care could make it into my line of fire. I understand there is always an idiot but if you use common sense I'm pretty sure you'll be ok
 
Depends on where you're at. "Public land" can mean a lot of different things. Legally. In my state we have Federal BLM land, National Parks, National Forest, State Parks, State Wildlife Areas, and open space, etc. Each of those has different regulations for hunting, target shooting, etc. You gotta know the rules for the location you're going.

Where I shoot on public land, there's nobody for miles and miles. I can shoot anywhere in any direction. It's big, open, and desolate. I could get away with shooting RPGs and cannons and fertilizer bombs and tactical nukes and nobody would ever know.

Where YOU go might be a total zoo. But that doesn't mean shooting long distance on ALL "public land" is unsafe.
 

Yes it really is about location, and to some extent culture. If one is surrounded by liberal gobberments, then expect they will enact laws that favor the hiker, biker, and kayaker. In some cases they fight building safe shooting ranges.

Here in Wisconsin we have an excellent example, where all state land, is posted no shooting, in the populous south eastern and south central part of the state, but in the northern half, there is no such posting. Just cleanup your mess, and make sure you know your target, and what is beyond.

Out west, we shoot where ever we want, but again, clean up your mess, and know your target and what is beyond.

I'm going to wager a guess and say anyone who's saying its not possible to target shoot on public land out west, has never spent much time out there on their public land. From an old boy from KY its beyond comprehension.

This past November, I was hunting with some buddies out West and they told me we were hunting between 8-9 million contiguous acres.

I do know we drove 23 miles off a main road to get to our spot where we camped and started hunting from there. I've hunted in CO, WY, NM and NV and I"m amazed at the vastness out there. I absolutely love it and try not to take it for granted when I go.
