pump air pistol for dispatching animals????

does anybody here think that a pump air pistol (.177) would ethically dispatch a fox or coyote at close range? i had one in college and killed many a squirrel and rabbit with one. i don't have a pistol permit, and my .22 is bulky and i'd love to have something smaller to carry on my trapline. however i don't want to see an animal suffer. any of you guys ever try it?

When I was a kid I had a crosmen pc77 pump air pistol. When I would trap raccoons in a live trap I would shot them in the head and it did a good job. I think it would kill a fox, but a coyote might be too much. I would catch them in a catch pole to control the shot placement. There are other ways to humanly dispatch coyotes and foxes.

I don't think that would be ethical. If gun size/weight is an issue for you, you can get a single shot kids .22 at Walmart for about $100. That wouldn't be bulky and if you put a sling on it, you can put it on your back and it wouldn't be heavy at all. I think there would be less of a chance of having the animal suffer with a .22lr compared to a pellet gun.

30" and 2.5 pounds...shouldn't be bulky

A pellet gun can kill a fox. Why go out and buy a new gun if you have a good pellet gun?! Is it the crossman 1300? That's a good pump action pellet pistol. And get the golden pellets that travel faster. If you have good shot placement, you can use it. You don't need to spend an extra $100!

First of all, it may be illegal to shoot fox or coyote with a pellet gun, so check that out first. Secondly, if you don't want the animal to suffer any more than it has to, spend the $100 on a little .22 because using a pump action pellet gun is not a good idea! Unless it is a high powered air-rifle, I don't even think a pellet gun would break the skull of a fox or coyote. A pump action pellet pistol can't be rated at more than about 700 feet per second. Do what you want, but I'm saying it would be a worthy investment of $100 to get a little .22 before trying to use a pump action pellet gun on coyote or fox, if you have any respect for the animal.

Heres a vid that one of my friends on YouTube uploaded dispatching coons with a .22 air pistol. Most of them are D.R.T.

This is a Benjamin Marauder. It is a high quality air gun.

To each his own life would be boring if we all liked the same stuff just aint nothing i can do with a marauder that i cant do with my 622 s and w .

No doubt your 22 will kill animals fine but a marauder with a suppressor is an amazingly accurate, deadly accurate, kick but air gun. Anyone who has ever shot one or the discovery wants one!

What?

Are you saying 700 fps at point blank range (near muzzle touching close) from an airgun won't do the job on a fairly thin skulled varmint?

(That's only a few hundred feet per second slower than a .22 out of a pistol.)

If you have ever done it, you would see that it's instant brain failure for the critter. Get up close to the thing, it ain't like it can run away, 'cause if it could, it would have done so long before you got there.

I knew a guy that couldn't own a gun to hunt, so he started trapping. He carried one of the miniature baseball bats you win at carnivals. He'd smack anything in the noggin and that was it. I thought he was crazy, because he'd smack skunks and coyotes with the little bat too. Too short for my liking, but highly effective and no blood loss or holes to sew. Of course, we don't have badgers here to worry about and he didn't trap bobcat regularly either. But worked on Fox, Skunk, Coon, Coyote, Possum, Beaver, Muskrat, and anything else he could catch and was very light and easily carried in his bucket.
