Pup training on a coyote (pics)

I just got done guiding a hunter yesterday and was back to pup training today. My buddy shot a coyote behind my house, but it was a runner. He called and needed some recovery help. I loaded up Gunner, Dixie, Brandy, and Sadie to get some training on these young dogs. I got the dogs downwind about 100 yards of where the coyote ran into and the pursuit was on. I snapped a few pics to share with yall.

The dogs catch wind of the coyote.

He is none too happy to be found.

Gunner is first on the scene to show the young girls how it's done. I just got him doctored up from a bad infected bite on his muzzle from a coyote a couple days ago. I was hoping it wasn't going to break open again.

The young dogs all took a strong interest in the coyote and get a few bites in.

The coyote decides to dish out a few of his own bites. A near miss on Brandy's muzzle.

Gunner had enough and pulled the coyote in the open, about knocking me backwards with a wad of dogs and coyote in my lap. Once in the open, he and Dixie show them how it's done.

I'm really impressed with Dixie. She finally grabbed hold of a coyote the other day. Today was no different. She got bit 3-4 times, but jumped right back in there for the throat.

Even Brandy, the youngest, got a few shots in.

All in all, great training for the young dogs. Sadie, the Ridgeback/Catahoula pup, took the worst of the bunch. The coyote grabbed her muzzle and held on. She shyed off for a while, but got back in there. This was her first look at any coyote and looks like she may have what it takes.

Thought I'd share.

Awesome shots tony! Looks like tyou have some good dogs there. My pups name is sadie too..ha. She is a German short hair though. Hunting a little different animals, that don't bite back.

Great pics tony, it looks like your dogs can get it done. I'm always impressed at the quality of your photos. You really know how to get into the middle of the action.

Yeah, I get right in there with them. I've had my share of bites from it. Every good houndsman knows that he is just part of the pack.

Thanks guys...

that's what i'm talking about , i love hunting with the decoy dogs, have been out with duane from shooters service and it was a blast, those dogs sure get r done.

awesome pics.

That is too cool. Those young ones are getting right into it.

Did you make those collars? If not where did you buy them?

Awesome!

Way to take advantage of an opportunity. Nice to have that kind of Horse...er..DogPower to support those youngsters.

Tony, have you measured & weighed your "Devin Terrier Cross" pup recently? Looks to me like Devin hit on something special there.

We have a pretty steady supply of cage trapped coons here. Any training thoughts?

I haven't measured or weighed Dixie, but will, as soon as we purchase a bathroom scale. She's taller than Gunner and alot taller that I ever anticipated. She's got great legs under her. I was a bit concerned about the lack of grit, but she's really poured it on this week. I'll keep putting the coyotes in front of her and see how she progresses.

Jason, Brandy did pretty good, as well. I'm going to put her on rabbits for a while to jump start her training. She should be a totally different dog in 3-4 weeks of it.

DoubleCK, I used to use box trapped coons for training my coonhound pups, and my coyote catch dogs for years. Unfortunately, we don't have any around here. I'm limited to jackrabbits and coyotes.

Richie, I made the collars. I used a woodburner to write my name and phone number on them. It worked out really good. I have a few 14" collars made up with no engraving yet, if you are interested in one. I can engrave it for ya.
