I know this might be simple but i hv to ask this question.

What is the difference btw a 308....30-06....and a 7.62x51?

Is a 308 the same as the 7.62...i always thought it was as the 308 was the civilian version of the 7.62x51

.308 is a 7.62x51 mm cartridge. Bullet diameter is .308-.310 approximately 7.62mm.

.30-06 uses the same projectile but has a longer case, 63 mm.

As for civilian or military designation, the measurements are static. The .308/7.62 x51 is also referred to as the 7.62 NATO.

I'm sure more detailed and historical information will follow from those more educated in this arena.

Well I do know that the .30-06 was named because it's a .30cal. and was introduced in 1906 so that is how the name came to be. Just think of the .308/7.62x52 like you do the .223/5.56.

but the joys of the internet! .308 and the .30-06 all the info you need!

The 30-06 was really introduced in 1903 and rejected by the military for some reason. Re-introtuced in 1906 and accepted. I don't remember the reasons. The 30-06 is the caliber of the 03 springfield.
I read this somewhere before the electronic age came about.

iirc, the 03 was initially a 30-40 Krag replacement borrowing the heavy 220 gr bullet and containing it in a longer brass. Some feeding issues in the 03 Springfield, throat erosion showed during test/ implementation and then ballistics/trajectries weren't that great. The 03 was revised to a ligher 150 gr fmj, cut down approx. 2mm, and slower burning Dupont Pyro DG used and the rifles were re-barrelled for the "new" cartridge. The 30-06 was born. The powder was switched to 4895 in the late 20's and continued, primarily with that until she was replaced completely in 1966.

The stuff you pick up researching your Garand!! LOL!
