i messed up and bought a box of vmax 55 grain that were moly coat. what exactly does this mean and should i not reload them when the time comes. they are all grey and so is the tip. thanks. i have only shot factory loads out of my savage that were 55gr vmax.

One Box of bullet tips or cartridges. If just bullet tips soak them in hot water with some Dawn dish soap. That will take off moly.

If a box of cartridges, just shoot them up.

yes, it was a box of tips. thanks for the tip. is there any advantage to shooting moly over standard? im new to reloading so i have been going through pages and pages on this forum trying to soak it all in.

I have been shooting Sierra 70 grain Blitz King molycoated for as long as they have been available, first in a Browning Abolt 243 and now in my Savage Predator 243, with no kind of problem. When I was loading non molycoated Sierra, I had to clean my bore much more often than with the molycoated to maintain the best grouping accuracy. I would say that makes it obvious that there is less friction shooting molycoated bullets, resulting in a cleaner bore.

I bought into the Moly craze a few years ago while heavily involved in NRA highpower rifle competition. It was supposed to be the best thing since pockets on shirts. Claims ranged from more accurate, higher velocity, less barrel wear, cleaner barrels, etc. IMO the first three claims were false, the latter is true.

Velocity drops w/moly coated bullets when compared to naked bullets and any given load, but you can get back up by increasing charge. Barrels wear out from throat erosion caused primarily by hot gasses first and friction second so, in my experience (which is, admittedly, somewhat limited as I have only worn out four 30-06 and one 308 Norma Mag. rifle barrels to date), the useful accuracy was about the same for coated or non-coated bullets. Barrels do tend to go longer between cleaning w/coated bullets than bare bullets, but accuracy is not improved per se. Copper fowling is reduced, therefore cleaning is a bit easier w/coated bullets.

All in all I found very little benefit from Moly so discontinued its use. This is especially true since Wipeout foaming bore cleaner came out making bore cleaning so easy.

Sometimes I use Moly and sometimes not.

For example, on my deer rifles, I'll thoroughly clean them at the end of a season. Then before season, I'll shoot about 3-4 rounds to foul the bore and to verify that the scope is still on. If all is good then hopefully I get a couple more shots at deer. I see no reason to moly for this application.

Same goes for a few rifles I use for coyotes with premium barrels.

I will use moly on some of my varmint rifles that hopefully will get hundreds of rounds shot out of them on prairie dog fields or such. I do use moly on a 17 Rem and a couple 20 cals.

Some swear by it and some swear at it.

Ol’e Coyote Junki has it right. Just shoot naked bullets in your favorite deer rifle, and your calling rifle with a match barrel, clean’em , foul’em, and dial’em. Moly bullets are only for the guy who is headed to his favorite prairie dog patch with a coffee can full of loaded 17’s, 204’s or 223’s with bad intentions, and is going to empty all of them. My 700 Remington varmiter in 204 is shooting just as good on round 300 in the heat, as when I started. Naked bullets just won’t do it without cleaning in the field.
