Question for Oklahoma hunters on shotgun loads?

I would like to know what you folks are using in your shotguns for predator hunting here in Oklahoma. It seems on this site alot of people like the #4 and 00 buckshot, but these are not allowed in Oklahoma according to the regulations. Why?? So what are some of the alternatives you have had good luck with and are they available locally or are you having to mail order them. Any info or opinions would be appreciated.

What are the regulations in Oklahoma? If the good company here know what the restrictions are I'll bet you'll get some solid advise.
 
Let me see if I can recall this correctly

Shotgun Pellet Size Restrictions
No person in the field may possess or attempt to harvest any wildlife, except waterfowl and crane, with a shotgun using shot larger than conventional BB (.180 in. dia.).

Thats for daytime and if your in a waterfowl area you have to use non-toxic shock

You can still hunt at night with special restrictions
This is from OSS T29-5203.1B

B. Any person may use a shotgun, using No. 6 size shot or smaller, longbow, light and a call for the purpose of hunting predatory animals, provided that written permission is obtained from the local game warden for each twenty-four-hour period of hunting.

I was so disappointed in #6 shot performance that I quit night hunting here. As for daytime hunting BB's or #2's work if you can find them in lead. For me I'll use a rifle.
 
With that information and only considering daylight hunting I'd definetely check out the Hevi-Shot high velocity loadings of BB's. A 3" .12 gauge load of Hevi BB's at 1,350 fps through a good choke should stretch out any coyote to 40+ yards.
 
I agree with you Tom, #6's SUCK, that is ridiculous, and it really made me made when they changed the law about night hunting and made it where you have to get permission from the warden. And I dont even think that is in the published hunting regs they put out either, you have to dig in the statutes to find it. I think a far amount of people in OK dont even know this.
 
And notice how on the "feral hog" regulations that they say you can only shoot 30 minutes before legal sunrise and 30 minutes after legal sunset. The beasts are taking over and are mostly nocturnal. The game departement better change some things before its too late!
 
Yeah and in Three Rivers, Honobia, and Broken Bow WMA's you can only hunt them during deer archery, youth anterless deer, muzzle loader, and the first nine days of rifle deer season, Heck thats where they are the thickest. I dont know what the thinking is on that deal.
 
Yeah, I feel everyone's pain on this deal. It won't be long until there are major regulations on feral hogs. I also knew that you could hunt at night here in Oklahoma with the wardens permission. They made it too much of a hassle though just to discourage most people from doin it. Here's my deal, it says that no predator may be taken from the hours from darkness to daylight with the aid of an artificial light or sight dog. It doesn't say anyting about moon light. Moon light is NOT artificial. That's a whole different argument. I can't get anyone to tell me that it's okay to hunt by the moon light. I think the whole idea about night hunting is that the ODWC doesn't want people out poaching deer. They question an honest person's integrity when they do that, don't you think?

Anyway, I may ask my local warden about night hunting sometime just to see how the whole thing goes and if it's even worth it or not.

The whole law depends on the ranger working your area, down in Clayton the ranger doesn't let anyone hunt at night but I've heard of a ranger letting people hunt hogs at night in another county. I've hunted in the free state of Texas and using a rifle and light caught me looking over my shoulder more than once but it sure was nice after I got used to it. Of course everyone knows Texas doesn't have any deer to tempt anyone with. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif The only way to change the law is to attend the public forums they've been having and voicing our opinions, they work for us don't they?

Good luck getting the gameranger around here to respond to a phone call in a 48 hour period let alone give you permission for a single 24 hour hunt.
I agree,too much of a pain.
"they work for us",its like everything else,politics,politics.My uncle was the director of the department in the late seventies and he just couldn't stand the politics.He was very disappointed with the direction the OWD was headed at the time of his death 5 years ago.
I'm all up for a pettition for change.
 
Hey guys, I really appreciate all the information. Also glad I'm not the only one who is a little irritated with our hunting regulations. I realize that they are just trying to protect our valuable deer herd! But, as it always goes regulations never stop the poachers anyway, and the honest law abiding man suffers some what by following the regulations. We just need to make sure our voices are heard in a positive realm and hope someone eventually listens!

I would like to see some statistical data that shows the change in the law of predator hunting at night has decreased the number of poached deer. Bet there is no emperical data to back that up. If someone is gonna poach a deer they will poach a deer. They have about 5-6 of these open forums around the state each year, I havent seen the listings for this year. I have been to one before and felt like it was more of a dog and pony show than anything else.
 
Shane, you are probably right about the dog and pony show. I talked to a guy from Eufaula who is in the trapper & predator callers Okla. chapter and they've been trying to get the Otter (I believe) taken off the no no list, says you can't hardly trap without catching a hundred or so but last I heard it was to no avail. The night hunting issue would be recieved just as well. However I guess a fellow could buy a dog of some sort and hunt with a .22lr, doesn't say how the dog could be used just that you could use a dog and a light. I can see it now, drop the tailgate and open the dog box to let Fi Fi the toy poodle out, lol.
 
Tom Yeah they would probably play on the definition of a "hound" on that deal but I dont know if there is a definition in the stats that says what a hound is. I have thought the same thing, but then your there with a 22lr, OH Well
