The black areas are the original anodizing of the gun. I taped them off by using torn strips of masking tape, and purposefully taped off the knurled part of the handguard..

then I did several colors including using some sticks for masking

and removed the tape from everything except the handguard and coated it with a flat clear spray.

Honestly, I judt did this because I could, and I thought it would be fun. And it wss.
 
Torn tape is one of my favorite methods. You can go mild or wild with it and do vertical, horizontal, or meshing patterns. A before and after of one I did for a buddy. Black base coat with khacki and greens and browns over it.

I use carb and choke cleaner, scuff with 600grit sandpaper really good, then carb and choke cleaner again. There are a bunch of degreasing options out there. Duracoat sells one that makes cheap bluing almost fall off. I just find carb and choke cleaner or rubbing alcohol to be cheaper.
 
Thanks Corey. So it is auto mechanic type stuff. I'll check autozone. I don't want the existing finish to me messed up at I plan to only paint parts of it.
 
If you want to be able to take it back to original, just wipe it with alcohol, clear, not the green stuff. It'll cut oils and evaporate fast. Carb and choke cleaner may remove some surface finishes. I did my AR with Krylon fusion, but didn't fully prep it incase I wanted to go back. My cheek is rubbing it off the stock and the barrel has lost paint in places. I did a mission specific desert pattern for a hunt, but wasn't sure I wanted that scheme for my home area. Once I figure out what I want, I'll either scuff and strip it for home Duracoat or send it out for Cerakote bake finish.
 
I just did mine the other day and went with the sponge method. It's super easy and looks good. I thought about taping it off and getting a little more intricate but touch-ups would be a pain. With the sponge, you just dab some on and call it good.

I used Rustoleum, cause that is what Snowmanmo said he used. He gave me his secret recipe and it seems to hold up well so I duplicated it.
