i was wondering how many states allow baiting. in the washington state regs say something about baiting bear while hunting is illegal. i don't have the regs in front of me, but would this mean that baiting would be legal before the season?

here in Alaska there is a class you must take from the f&g and i think you have to let them know where you are hunting and it has to be a certin distance from trails and roadways.im not sure of the specifics becouse i havent hunted over bait before but thats the general idea.oh yeah Black Bears only, no brownies unless it is on a carcaus

Bear baiting is legal in Wyoming. You do have to register your bait station I believe. The thing that makes it not worth while is alot of areas reach the mortality quota and get closed before a bait site gets productive enough to hunt.

idaho allowed it 3 years ago, infact they were having such a bad time with black bears they were selling out of state license for dirt cheap and in most areas you received two tags that were good in the spring & in the fall. not sure what there like now.

p.s. cheap fruit /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif whine works great with fruit, the cheaper the better. also go to a butcher & ask when they get rid of their scraps /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gifthey will probably give it to you. save that stuff up a couple weeks to a month in advance. the stinkier the better. donuts are also good to use. we would fry up donuts in grease from karl juniors, for some flavor we would add in the cheap wine with fruit. i felt like a top notch chef! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif it was great. if you go you might want to check into crow license & possibly wolf depending on where you go if its allowed. we had a wolf hitting one of our sites(could not shoot in id) & there was always crows hanging araound.

In Oregon it is ILLEGAL now too, since 1994-95 season. They banned it the same time they banned hunting bear and cougar both with dogs. Remember though, naturally occuring bait is not "bait" in MOST states. Im sure since Oregon is so retarded this wont be the case soon. Find the huckleberries, old orchards, wild onion in the spring, etc., and you will find/bait the bear. They are an exceptionally easy animal to hunt. If you can wack the yotes with the best of them, the bears are a walk in the park... GOOD LUCK!

i was down in southeast Alaska on Prince of Whales Island and on the way back from stealhead fishing trip and seen where someone hit a little blacktail doe and it was mangled on the side of the road. so the next evening after work me and my old man decided to go and see if any thing had got on the kill. when we got to the spot the deer was gone and you could see where it was drug off back into the woods .so me and my dad set up and did some rabbit distress calls. about 10 minutes into the set i caugth some movement about 80 yards away, then it disapeared. my dad kept calling ,and i was trying to get his attention , he was about 20 yards from me and dident see the bear coming in. the bear stood up again at about 40 yards from me and was looking for what was making all the noise when he looked my direction i drilled him with my .338mag , all i had was a head shot and the bullet enterd his nostrel and i never found a singal bullet hole /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif his nose was a little busted but that was it. that was my first blackie

Randy Anderson calls one in in his latest video, I think he was doing a rabbit in distress. And it is legal to bait in Wisconsin, it's about a five year wait to get a tag though, so I only have to wait 3 more years!

I know for a fact that it IS ILLEGAL here in the state of Washington. The same goes for hunting them with dogs. It is illegal to bait any game animal and turkey. You may only hunt cougars with dogs in our state. I'm pretty sure that it is perfectly legal to call them in...I don't know why that would be illegal. What part of Washington do you hunt?

Its legal in Idaho. Required tag is $12.75. I have used most everything for bait one time or another. I like smelly stuff early to get their attention then I use mostly bread and cheap dog food. Fryer grease and oil from deli's is great to get a bait started too.

It is Not legal to hunt cougars with hounds in all of Wa. Check your regs, only certain counties and areas. And in those areas there are restrictions. Your state lost their rights to hound hunting when the initiative was on the ballot. Wa. did regain some lion hunting through lawsuits but not for the state as a whole.

Im sorry plottpower. I knew that. I realize that not just anyone can hunt them with dogs here. You do need a special permit. Thanks for clearing that up for Joeh.
