Question on making a paracord drag...length?

I bought myself some paracord last week and made a lanyard for my caller remote and a couple of mouth calls. It turned out pretty well. Now I am wanting to make a drag. Been reading a bit on here and see that there are several variations, I like the one pictured below and that guy doesn't make them anymore. I don't mind making it all, the lanyard was kind of fun so I will make it out of paracord. Seems like there are 3 or so styles that I am wondering about.

One is like pictured and you would drag the animal out. How long is this thing? Anybody have one that could shoot me some lengths?

Another looked a lot shorter and had short leads so that you could carry the critter out. I'm only 5'7" so it would probably be dragging anyway so the purpose would be defeated. lol

The last one was kind of intriguing to me. It fit over your shoulder and depending on lead length could be used to carry or drag. My lanyard I made 30" long, I tried it over my should and it seemed like a decent length to do either with.

When you guys are dragging things out, does it make it any easier if it is a few feet behind you? Seems like it would keep you from kicking it with each step if it was back a ways..Stupid questions but I don't want to make something that doesn't work...so how long should these things be?

Here is a pic of the one that I liked but can't tell how long either the "lead" or the wrist strap is..

Thanks for helping the ignorant! I may make a few in different sizes as they would be handy for carting coons out also, I have a blast calling them but just dread carting them out of the woods.

Them look nice.

Im not sure how long mine is, but the main thing is make it long enough you aint lifting the front end of coyote off the ground. Much easier dragging when you aint lifting the extra weight.
 
Good to know. I'll do some measuring before I make one. If I make the leads long I can always shorten them to get the ideal length for me. I know it will be different for me versus someone who is 6"3".

I think I will throw my lanyard around my shoulder and just add a long piece of cord and mess around dragging one until I figure out the right length for me.
 
Personally I like my drag only long enough so that I am not "Dragging" the coyote.

Dragging only de-values the Coyote. I carry them as much as possible, unless a lot of snow on the ground for dragging is the bestest!
 
I have that drag and it's not nearly that pretty anymore. Dang I did a nice job on that pic.

We all dont have those pretty pales that you have. I checked with my fur buyer and he said $5 on average. A real good one would bring 10. Only time I drag is for pictures and contests.

They are solid welded steel rings.

They were 1/2” inside diameter if I remember correctly.
I ran out a while before I stopped making lanyards and couldn’t find any more of them. After that I started tying loops on the ends and it worked just as well.

I still have one in the same colors that fw707 made me several years ago. Like others have said, it looks a lot different but still works great!!
 
I can't remember off hand how long my drag is. I basically made a 8' (??) loop op paracord and did a king cobra weave in the middle about 12" long. I loop one end of the drag around the paws, throw the handle through that loop and then loop the neck of the coyote. Doing that actually pulls the neck of the coyote up to the paws when dragging. I like it because it keeps half the coyote off the ground and cant undo if tension is taken off the cord. I'll see if I can post a picture here later.
 
Here are the specs I used making the drags:

1-Main cord 8’ long
2-Wrist braid section cords 9’ each—50 braids
2-Overlay cords 10’ each—30 braids

Just getting into this braiding stuff with paracord. I made 2 call lanyards. The first one was round braid with a double cobra over it, pictured above. The second one was a spiral braid with a double cobra over it. I think I like the spiral braid better.

The braid in your lanyard looks different and I can't identify it. What braid in underneath (the one with 50)? I want to look it up and try that this weekend as it looks cool.

The overlay braid is a cobra, isn't it (with all orange)?

Mine are way more primitive than yours, yours look way better also. I take about 4" of broom handle and drill a small hole and counter sink it enough for the knot to fit in. I take about 10 feet of cord and run it through the hole and tie a knot in the end so it won't go all the way through and tie a 2" loop in the end and just wrap the cord around the handle. It is long enough to tie around my waist if skiing so I can use both hands on the poles, I've also tied one coyote on the end and another 4' up so they drag one in front of the other. The wood handle is nice to toss over a limb to pull the coyote up to skin if it's a long way back to the truck, just put the loop over a hind foot.

You can see the handle by the tail.



I have one in each of my back scabbards and in the bottom of call bags.

The 50 braid section is a cobra braid-same as the orange overlay braid. The picture angle makes it look different. If it was laid out flat you would recognize it.
My call lanyards were cobra braid that transitioned to a round braid in the bottom sections.

I had a bunch of pictures but they all went away in the Photobucket deal.
