Question on Michigan regs.

I have recently moved to Michigan and was reading the hunting regs. and have a question about the rules about hunter orange. This is what the regs say:

You may not hunt with any device, or trap with a firearm, on any lands during daylight hunting hours from August 15-April 30 unless you wear a hat, cap, vest, jacket or rain gear of highly visible color, commonly referred to as "Hunter Orange." During the November firearm deer season, this law applies to all deer hunters, including those hunting with a bow and arrow. The garment, featuring Hunter Orange, must be the outermost garment and must be visible from all sides. Camouflage orange garments, with 50 percent or more of the surface in Hunter Orange, are legal.

Exception: This law does not apply to persons hunting waterfowl, crow or wild turkey, or to archery bear hunters, or archery deer hunters except during the November firearm deer season.

So does this mean you need to wear orange when hunting woodchucks, etc. and coyote? Or am I missing something?

HEY GRIZZ,
welcome to michigan.
To answer your question...yes...you must wear orange to hunt pretty much everything except waterfoul, turkey and archery hunting. If you are going to be in the woods during firearm deer season you must wear orange even if you are bow hunting.

I find that an orange hat keeps me legal just about anywhere and percentage wise it really isn't that much...the most important thing is to stay still, you can have all the camo you want but if you move around the yote is bound to see you.

good luck and good hunting!

Thanks Bushyote, looks like I am reading them right. Just not used to the idea of wearing orange when yote hunting, but I guess they're color blind anyway.
By the way I have seen a couple big groundhogs (thats what they are back in Iowa) ... er ... woodchucks out in the last week or so. I think they came out and thought "what the...who forgot to turn on the heat?!" And went back into their hole. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I won't be able to hunt them until after my hunter safety class is done in mid April anyway. I just missed the cuttoff date for hunter safety in Iowa so have never had to take it, but the cuttoff date is earlier here (1960) so I have to take it to get my license. Probably be me and a bunch of kids, but I might learn something anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

hey Grizz, you may want to call your local DNR office, i may be wrong, but i thought the law was if you could show proof of a pryer hunting expierience you did not need the hunter saftey class. something you may want to ckeck out

Drew, Thanks!

Papa, I'm already signed up and paid for class. Anyway, its always been something I have been planning on doing because if I ever go to another state to do some hunting, I might have to have it to hunt there.
It has finally warmed up a little in the last week or so, and I have been seeing a few whistle pigs! I'll be all set to start after them in May.
