question on oal

When loading, I have been first measuring my bullets and loading the ones that measure the closest. Then measuring oal from bass to tip. If oal was off, I was adjusting die to get same oal. Should I adjust die for cartridge oal and then leave it alone? Does that make measurment to ogive the same?

As long as the cartridge will fit in the magazine, your best bet is to acquire a bullet comparator that attaches to your caliper and measure the seated bullet using the ogive, rather than the tip of the bullet...The comparator doesn't cost that much from Hornady and it allows for much better accuracy consistency...

That way, once your seating die is set, you don't have to mess with it for that bullet...

As usually, my friend the "OLD TURTLE" has the ticket. I've found that using the bullet comparator and measuring using the ojive is the only reliable and consistent way to measure a finished cartridge. As has already been said, you need only concern yourself with the OAL is to make sure the finished cartridge fits into your magazine.

I remember when i got my first OAL gauge i was thrilled. Well the first time out to the range i realized putting them in the chamber one at a time works but getting them in the magazine is another. Now when i do a different caliber i have the gun sitting with me so i know they will go into the magazine also!!! Took one trip to the range for the light bulb to go on.

Yup! It's the only accurate way to seat bullets, for the correct clearance in your rifle! After you have the setting you want,it's best to make a "dummie round" and mark it with that bullet. Then when you go back to that bullet, just set the seater die up with the dummie round, and your ready to go! I've got a cigar box full of dummie rounds for all of my diffrent bullets, and guns. Ron

When buying this product would you buy the kit with the 14 shell holders, or would you buy just the body and then purchase your shell holders separately?

Mine came with the bushings. You can also use a larger bushing to measure a case sholder, to set your dies up correctly. Ron
