Question on Remington .243 model 7

I have this gun which i believe is what is considered a youth model. My son used it in his teen and pre teen years. My question is what should i expect for accuracy? It does have a 17 1/2 inch barrel. I'm assuming this would affect the velocity more than accuracy? Will it or should it be as accurate out to 200-400 yards as well as a longer or larger 243? I do reload. Thanks vince

I think you can hope for groups of 1 1/2" or so at 100 yards. Some will do better, some worse. That's plenty good for the typical called coyote shot at reasonable ranges. The very light barrel contour of the 18 1/2" Model 7 can heat up prety quick and string shots. Especially if there is a barrel bedding issue, then look out! Your rifle wasn't designed to be a long range shooter suitable for long strings of shots at small targets. I sense that you're aware of this and know the purpose of the short, light, handy little gun is for those short-medium range quick popping shots. A lot of predator callers use the Model Seven and love it. As do brush/mixed country deer hunters.

My dad gave me his .243 Win. It is a Rem 700 and he bought it in 1962. It has a 20 in. barrel and is accurate as all get out. I reload also, and I don't think that you'll find it all that hard to work up a good load.

I love the Model Seven!

Adjust the trigger.
Free float the barrel.
Glass bed the action.
It will shoot less than 1" groups all day with factory ammo.
I've done this with Model Sevens in both .223 and .243.

me!

CG thanks for the info. When you say " very light barrel contour" what exactly does that mean? I'm assuming when your talking about stringing shots you mean they keep elevating? as long as all parts are in good condition, bedding and so forth, is it the barrel length that will result in larger groups at longer ranges? thanks again vince

i light barrel means it isn't thick in diameter and will heat up faster then a thicker barrel.strigging shots mean they will shoot one here......... and on over here

and one here not in the same spot get it?
