Questions about "amp horns"...for diaphragm call users

Moderators, I placed this post in this sub-forum, simply because I want guys who use diaphragm calls to see it.
I'm not certain how many of those guys would look at posts made in the "Hand Calls" sub-forum.
I appreciate your understanding.

...........

If I may ask.....I have a few questions for those of you, who use "amp horns" while howling with diaphragm calls (regardless whether real horn, or "plastic").........

#1: On your "mouth" area...what size (inside measurement) of hole do you prefer?
(Edited to explain that, what I mean by "mouth", is the end of the horn that actually touches your face/lips.)(Seemed to be some confusion about that.Hahaha)

#2: What is the overall length of the horn, that you prefer?

#3: Do you like to have either a lanyard groove...or some other way to attach the amp horn to a lanyard...or do you just prefer to carry it in a pocket?

#4: Has anyone tried making an amp horn, by using an antler base (whitetail, muley or elk)?

My reason for asking, is because I am going to be making some amp horns...to put up for sale...during the month of January.
And, even though I HAVE made some in the past, it has been a couple of years.
And, I am wanting input from people who actually use amp horns...so I get some consistent properties for you potential customers.
...After all, I have heard that size and length can effect back pressure and pitch breaks (I have never used diaphragm calls)....just as it can with open reed howlers.

Well, you are welcome, sir.

Yes, obviously, I hope plenty of people give me feedback & info.
My fear (

) is that people will just read the post, and not give me the info I need (in order to help me, help them), though.

I'll shoot straight, I use what's out there, from the primos plastic one to the FoxPro much the same.

I would like to see one that had an opening that was like the bottom of a coke can, I hate feeling like I'm pursing my lips to use one of these, and I really hate it when I'm trying to bark.

So, a large opening, think large enough to go around the outside of your lips, would be interesting to try. With the thickness of the horn, it would also be interesting to angle the edge, angle in from the outside edge, giving a more comfortable seal.

The rest of the horn I want about 6" long, fairly straight curve, I like heavy walls, and I like a baseball'ish sized exhaust.

I actually contemplated getting a big elk grunt tube and cutting it to suit my needs.

But I'll say this, I'm willing to bet I'm a more aggressive and oddball caller then most, so my large mouth opening may not be others' flavor.

Good luck Will

I took an older cow horn howler and cut it back so the mouth piece opening is just slightly bigger than a ritz cracker ( about 2.25"). That left the overall length about 5" long. I would have liked it to be about 6" long with the exhaust about a tennis ball size or slightly larger with that classic horn howler up swept look. Would love to have a lanyard groove cut back into it as the old one was lost when I cut it back.

calling4life & Trappererick......Thank you both! This is the type of info/feedback that I am looking for.

It sounds as though, the previous amp horns I have made, have been about the right length. But, the "mouth" holes...as well as the exhaust/bells...have been smaller than what some of you prefer.

Keep the suggestions coming, folks!!!

Hey Will, when I diaphragm call I use an [beeep] amp...it's ok? But I did cut one of my old Elk bugler's down to about 8" long, 2 1/2" opening, it's plastic and seems to work better. But I mainly don't use an amp. Let me know if you decide to make one out of one of your antlers. Regards, Drop

I have made several amp horns out of cow horn and such. Out of all of them I have made my favorite is one thats on the small side. Maybe 4 or so inches long and 2 1/2 inch around. I custom cut the mouth piece to a little less than 2 inch probably. I know this sounds small but works well for me. My next favorite is a great big one. 8-9 inch long and a little less than softball sized at the end. Great locator amp but seldom carry it around. Hope that helps
