Quick Detachable Scope Rings... Why?!

What benefit do quick detach scope rings have?? I see no benefit for 95% of people that use them. Very few people ever need to swap out scopes or remove the scope to use the iron sights. In fact most folks I've seen with quick detach rings have a bull barrel with no iron sights anyways! But they're bulky with that knob sticking off the side like that, and they cost more.

I know a guy (doesn't know a lot about rifles) that just bought a nice new gun with a Leupold VX3 scope. He told the shop to put the best rings they have on it and bore sight it. The result? He got a stainless rifle, with a matte black scope, with gloss black Leupold quick detatch rings. The rings don't match anything (should be matte black to match the scope) and he has no iron sights on the gun. So why did they install quick detach rings???

Well, the rifle I have coming will get quick detatch rings. Why? For target use it will wear a fixed 10power, and when deer season rolls around it will get swapped out for a 3x9

In Mn you can't use a scope on a muzzle loader during muzzle loader season but you can use a scope on a ML during the regular firearms season.

Lots of cheating the rules during the ml season from guys I have talked to with them detachable rings. Get to stand and put the scope back on.

DD, I've never understood the need to have everything matching on a firearm. To me it's just a tool to do a job and I measure it's value by it's effectiveness to do it's job.

When I was playing golf for a living I would always see amateurs playing with matched sets of clubs that were not ideally suited to their game. I would always tell them that "I would play with a coffee can attached to a buggy whip if it would shave strokes off my game". My meaning is that my bag consists of a Titleist driver, Mizuno 3 wood, Ben Hogan Irons, Cleveland Wedges and a Ping Putter......because that's what I hit best. I don't care what it looks like or who it's made by as long as it works.

So why not just use ONE set if less expensive reguart scope rings, instead of TWO sets of the expensive rings? That's what I don't get.

Differant ammo?

If for no other reason than transport. A person always needs to be careful in handling a rifle...shipment / transport wise...but taking the mega high dollar scope OFF the weapon and carrying it separately...adds a bit of extra safety in it.

If i had say a SB or Swaro that costs $2500 and higher...you can bet that Id carry it around like it was "glass"

You really have to be less carefull with really good scopes (other than scrathching the glass). That's one part your paying for...

I have one pair of quick detach that was on a rifle when I got them. I do not like the bulky lever (it's not THAT bad) & have never taken it off. However, I have several scopes with picatiny rails & I REALLY like them. Not only can you not beat them off with a hammer, if you do decide to take the scope of for any reason (change barrels, swap scopes, etc..) a box end wrench & 20 seconds you got it off or on. Everytime I've put it back on (other than a total rebarrel) it's always within an inch

Many QD will get you back within 1 MOA. They are handy for transport, using more than one scope on a rifle or one scope for multiple rifles, and cleaning. If you have to take a non QD scope off, you have to re-level the crosshairs, resight, etc.

If you have to take a scope off with regular rings it only takes a few seconds. I don't know anybody who has ever taken off their scope for traveling.. And 1moa isn't close enough for me, I would have to confirm EXACT zero before hunting.

I still don't see the advantage.

I use QD mounts on a couple of my ARs for competition and hunting....There are time when target acquisition is in very close range and I use an EO-Tech, other times for hunting or moderate distance targets, I need an optic in the 2-10x range, and still other times when my shots will be in the 200+ yard range, such as Prairie Dogs or precision target work and I will use a 6-24x optic...At an 'action' match, I may use all three..

My 'travel box' is fitted for carrying an AR, broken down, with all optics cradled very similar to a breakdown shotgun case, so I can carry it through a motel lobby without raising a bunch of eyebrows...They all return to "zero" when installed...

The real benefit is in not having to have a scope dedicated to each rifle you own. I can afford 3 NF scopes in different magnifications from 2.5X to 32X to cover anything from coyotes to pdogs. No way could I afford 18 or 20 NF scopes to put one on each rifle I own. With QD I can always use the highest quality glass.

I can zero a scope to each rifle it might sit on and tape the zero data to the stock of that rifle, being sure that it will be dead on when I mount the scope. With a good picatinny rail and quality QD and scope, you will be dead on every time you mount the scope.

I remove scopes on 2 of my rifles every time when transporting, I like to put my guns in a standard case and with QD rings I can. It keeps my scopes and guns in better condition. I like the Warne QD rings and when I put them back on my zero doesn't move more than 3/4"
