quietest rifle with longest range for my boys

The 22 Hornet or 17 Hornet are what you are looking for. CZ makes a some nice ones and they have the set trigger for more precision shooting. They are easily 200 yards plus rifles. Softer report, easier on the ears.

In regards to the heirloom thing. My grandchildren will inherit a really sweet Browning Micro Hunter 22 Hornet with a Leupold VX-III 4.5x14x50 and a Custom Browning Micro Hunter 17 Ackley Hornet with a Leupold VX-III 3.5x10x50 illuminated German #4 Dot. BUT THEY ARE MINE RIGHT NOW!!!

Otherwise, go with everything Repete said above.

Any center fire should have a suppressor or el-ear-muffs for the kids, IMO.

I never shoot or hunt anymore without a set of muffs on ready to pull down when a shot presents itself even 22 LR. Easy habit to get into...thank God!

What if the little ones decide they don't want to reload? I'd stick to a commonly available caliber you can buy at a small mom/pop store like 223 or 22-250. JMHO

The quietest gun unsupreesed with the longest distance to me, would be a 17 SQ. Here is my cooper, it's really quiet and it will reach out there with very little powder.

I wont even shoot .22 LR without hearing protection and certainly not .22 magnum. It's not worth it, I've got friends between 27 and 30 that say "WHAT?" multiple times during a conversation, they think they are bad@sses for not wearing hearing protection but they can't even hear coyotes and deer running through weeds around them, just makes them look like morons... and they have a long way to go.

I would go with .223, low recoil, plenty on range for most people and ammo everywhere but it will ruin hearing just like any other gun on this planet.
