Quitting smoking

I understand.........I do wish you sucess.
I chose not to smoke for over 10 years, then about 4 years ago I was in Brazil on business about 100 yards from the beach. I went down to the local cantina and saw some Cuban's(cigars)and I had one along with an adult beverage........So now that you have chosen not to smoke.........don't pick another one up......you can do it, it is your choice....

In 1994 I made a commitment to quit smoking, to myself, my family, and to my best friend, Jim. We hunted birds, deer, elk, fished during our 20 plus year friendship. We also served in Vietnam the same year, but hadn’t yet met. Jim was also my best man at our wedding in May, 1974 . Jim and his family members were time friends of a lifetime!
.
In 1994 Jim was diagnosed with lung cancer. The day he told me of his Stage 4 lung cancer, he asked me to quit that very day, to promise that I would never smoke another cigarette, and to scatter his ashes at the hunting spot we shared for many years. I haven’t had one nor do I want one ever again. His family and I put his ashes in our old elk hunting hole at Dworshak Dam in northern Idaho. My wife, Terri, and I witnessed his slow and painful struggle with lung cancer. Jim wanted both of us to quit in order to spare our families the pain that his family was going through. How do you thank your best friend for being an inspiration to save your own life?

It’s hard to quit but you can do it, lots of us have . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifGENE’O

Hidalgo:

I had this challenge issued to me here sometime back when I decided to quit smoking:

Sarah Brady admits to being addicted to cigarettes. Surely you are stronger than she is and can kick the habit!

I quit for good 7 years ago. I had tried to "taper off" several times and it just wouldn't work for me. One day I made a commitment to myself and God that I was done. The first month was pure hell, then it got better. To this day I think if I had just one smoke I'd be hooked all over again. I used to think I could be a "casual" smoker and only have one now and then with a friend or with a cup of coffee or a drink, but I'd stop and buy a pack on the way home. I'm glad to have that monkey off of my back and don't ever want it again. BTW, +1 for feeling better! Didn't realize what I was missing.

You can do it Hidalgo and Old Turtle, I'm proud of you both for the effort. Keep us posted every day and it will be easier to quit if you have to come on here and admit that you gave in. Peer presure can be used in a positive way!

You know what did it for me? Bronchitis. I got that real bad a few years ago, I was off work for 2 days. I didnt smoke while I was sick, so I had a 48 hour lead time on the quitting, and I stayed away from cigs since.

Scientifically it takes 48 hours for all traces of pretty much any drug to run through your liver. Once you are beyond that point, any addiction is in your mind. Just keep reminding yourself that you control your actions. Your actions do not control you.

Good for you!!

I have tried to quit dippin and it makes me a grumpy S.O.B. My wife will say what s up with you and then I tell her I quit dippin. SHe is happy for about 4 hours then she tells me if I am going to be such a jerk she will go to the store and buy me a can. I gotta quit. I just eat everything in sight. And with hunting season coming I cant aford the extra pounds. What is the best Mouth fix? ANy help would be great.

When I quit I didn't want gum or candy. So I went with tooth picks instead. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

Try some of the herbal chews on the market today. I won't endorse any here but PM me and I'll let you know what I used. Gave it up after 23 yrs of using and hopefully won't be looking back at that monster. Cold turkey is best but if you can't try weaning yourself down by mixing the herbal brand with your regular and reduce the amount of regular tobacco in your mix until it is zero.

Im right there with you. Im on day 5 with no dip and I want it so bad I can taste it. I chew lot of gum and that beef jerky that comes in the can that looks like dip. I didnt tell my wife that I was gonna quit till she asks me yesterday why the heck I was such a cranky prick. Then I told her and shes cutting me some slack. But man o man is it hard.

I buried my best friend and Hog riding partner of 20 years a month ago.......Lung cancer. After 2 heart attacks and 2 stents, he wouldn't give it up, and we couldn't talk him out of it, and his last days were miserable. My wife and I quit cold turkey many, many years ago, and I'm talkin' Camels, Pall Malls, Lucky's, etc. It's tough, but ya just gotta STOP! I hope for the best for you, there is a new drug called Chantix which is supposed to be pretty good, you might want to check that out. Please let us know how you're making out....oh, and my friends daughter gave up her cigarettes 2 days after the funeral......she's on her way to better health......

Regards,

John

I quit chew after 15+ yrs. The 2 things that gotme through it was really wanting to quit, and I chewed alot of gum. So much in fact that my gum swelled and my teeth hurt so bad it was hard to eat. This went on for a bout 3 months. If you truly have the will, you can do it.

For you guys that dip and chew, if you want incentive to quit, talk to anyone, like myself who has had laser gum surgery. Basically, they take a pulse laser and burn the gums away from your teeth and try to promote growth around the roots that was degenerated by tobacco abuse. I had three sittings of it and let me tell you guys, when you can smell the burning flesh, see the smoke, and have to live off of Ensure milkshakes for 2 weeks while your gums go from bleeding raw meat, to scabs, then back to soft tissue and you're not allowed to brush for those two weeks and all the pain of regrowth and healing is there, not to mention the knowing what you're in for on visit 2 and 3, trust me you won't miss it a bit. Do I crave the taste, sure, but after those thoughts, I get over it real quick /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Quit both the dip and the Marlboros in 1996.....the only way to do it is cold turkey. A few facts I share with my patients:

1. as previously mentioned, the physical addiction to nicotine is past after the first forty-eight hours. After that it's all mental (most of us are a bit mental anyway though...eh?)

2. Cravings will last less than fifteen seconds, and do whatever you have to do to make it through those fifteen seconds. Each one gets a little easier to deal with.... until you don't notice them much any longer.

3. If you decide you're going to gain weight when you quit..... You will. The opposite is also true.

4. Any stressor sounds like a good reason to start smoking/dipping again at the time, but stupid retrospectively.

Lots of folks have done it, and lots more haven't... and have suffered indescribably for the habit, and the love of the drug. I commend anyone who has beaten tobacco, and thank them for making my job down the road one patient easier.

I am curious to know how everyone is doing? I have been smoking since I was 11yrs. old and been on my own since I was almost 14. I am now 42 and have quit many times just not for very long. Maybe a week in a half tops, then something happens and I go right back? I wished I would have seen this post and we could have quit together cause Lord knows I would need the help.
