"TC Calls" Bowfishing Trip

This past week I had the pleasure of meeting up with my fellow TC calls team, Torry Cook and Dave Stucks, down in Arkansas to do a little bowfishing for a predator of a different kind. We had an awesome trip, even better than I could have imagined. Records were set!!!

I left for the long 11 hour trip on Tuesday evening and had planned to stop halfway or so and rest, but Torry and Dave called on my way and said they had already hit the water and found the fish, and they were everywhere. I couldn't stand it so I ended up driving the 11 hours with only a couple stops for diesel and pit stops. I arrived in Arkansas at the camp at about 2 a.m. and drove directly to the boat ramp and jumped in the boat and grabbed a bow. I had a fish in the boat less than 3 minutes after I had arrived. I caught a second wind and we ended up fishing until about noon the first day and filling our barrel. When we finally ended up going back to camp, I don't know if I slept or passed out, but the AC and a nice bed sure did feel good.

The next few days we did a mix of nighttime and daytime fishing. With temperatures breaking records all across Arkansas this past week it made it pretty rough to be out on the water. On thursday it reached 114, and we stayed on the water from daylight til dark. I'm glad we did though! Torry ended up shooting the new Arkansas State Record Long-Nose Gar. We all had to shoot him to get him on the boat but we finally wrangled him in. It was well worth toughing out the heat conditions to be in on that kill. Torry already held the previous state record, in which he set back in 2000. Here's a pic of the giant on the left and a boat full of carp and gar:

We ended up filming most of the trip as well, which threw in that extra degree of difficulty, but we ended up getting over 5 hours of footage and a countless number of kill shots on tape. Since it was SO hot we had the privilege of having the lake and river to ourselves the entire week. I think I only saw 1 or 2 boats all week.

We were shooting gar and asian carp for the most part. Both were new to me, seeing as we have neither up here in the mountains of Virginia. It was definitely a great experience. It was very cool seeing those flying carp whizz right past your head as you're motoring down the river. Torry about got his nose broke by one and Dave took a big one to the gut one day. I was lucky enough to not get hit by one, but I felt the wind off a couple though! They sure do put up a good fight when you get an arrow in one.

It was a great trip, and it was great getting to hang out with Torry and Dave. We had some awesome fishing, shot a TON of fish, located quite a few coyotes with some new TC diaphragms we are testing out, and had a great time just hanging out. If you've never been bowfishing, I'd definitely recommend it. I can cross that one off my bucketlist now. And shooting the new state record while we were down there just made the trip even that much better. BTW, that is the 4th time Torry has broken the state record! That boy knows where the big fish are, and definitely put us on them this past week!

I just want to thank Torry and Dave for their hospitality this past week at their camp. They are a couple great guys and would do anything in the world for ya. I'm sure glad to call them my friends and be part of the TC Calls Team. Here are a few pics of the trip and some of our catch:

Me holding the State Record Long-Nose Gar. I'm 6'3, so that gives you an idea of how big he was. We didn't measure his length but he was a good 6 feet long.

Completely unfair! Im on the wrong side of the country. Haha. Looks like a great time. Great job fellas. Dave and Torry, I'll see ya in a few months in Arkansas.

Nice job guys ol Tory is a master at many trades it looks like. Those are some huge fish. I've been bow fishing a few times and it's a rush like no other. Jason nice story as well don't tell me Tory has a new " Gar diaphragm" call in the works... Lol you guys got a 2 for 1 state record fish and heck of a sun tan. Take care Skinner

Nice pics and narrative, Jason. Looks like you guys had a blast.

Congrats on another record gar, Torry!

Dave/Torry - I have a hat with a different kind of "A" on it that I'll send you guys free if you promise to wear them.

Thanks for all the comments fellas. We had a heck of a time fishing with Jason & plan on making this an annual event. The heat was rough on us, but it kept the fish up & rolling making for some great fishing. We took several big gar & were able to fill the boat up everyday. We didn't keep count, but we killed several hundred fish on this trip, mostly in the daytime! I can honestly say this trip with Dave & Jason was one of the best & most memorable hunting trips I've ever been on. Can't wait to do it again next year!! Here's a few more pics.

What did the record end up weighing in at? Ive never been bow fishing but heard its alot of fun. Also what do you guys do with all them fish after shooting them? I hear gar is pretty good to eat but dont know about the carp. I had one of them asian carp darn near take my head off on the Missouri River a few years ago. I def felt the wind off the thing and he ended up being cut bait for jumping in the boat. Great pics and story. Josh

What a Hawg!
No pass thrus?
Were you using long barbs?
3 of those dwarf anyting I ever shot back in OK and MO.
Good going fellas.
I know how much fun it is.

The record fish was well in the 40's. Torry held the old record at 36.5 lbs. Buddy, I wouldn't eat gar unless I just didn't have anything else to eat. Some folks do eat them though. I have been hit about 5 times now by those asian carp. I've seen a couple of other guys hit pretty hard. Torry and I went out with a couple of buddies awhile back and one jumped up, busted the windshield on the driver's side of the boat and nailed ol' Chad right in the face... HARD! Knocked him silly for a second or two. Those things will give you a jolt sometimes!

Yeah, Torry is one of the best. He'll never tell it, so I will. Torry is a former world champion bowfisherman and has won about every title there was to win, back when he was competing. I gurantee you, if there was a way to call in a gar, Torry could make a diaphragm for it! Lol, as far as the sun tan... more like a sun burn! Come see us sometime Seth!

This was a great time! It was great having our good friend Jason down here with us! We fished until we dropped everyday. We were able to get into fish everyday and do pretty well. Definatly one of the best vacations I've had. Nothin like hanging with good friends and shooting some big fish. The heat was pretty tuff, but as long as we were in the fish, we just couldn't stop. We even jumped in with the alligators one time to cool off! I can't wait until the next time! Thanks for all the comments guys!

No pass threws= less time getting a fish off= more time shooting less time fooling with stuck fish. Turn your bow down when shooting shallow water or rolling gar. Just need enough to bury the barbs.

WOW!! Jason, Torry & Dave, with pics like these you guys make it look easy!!! I know ya'll had a blast! I can't decide whether popping coyotes or tagging gar is the most fun!!!

The weather-man said AR had an 'average' high of 114*! Now that is some miserable heat with the humidity thrown in too!! It looks like ya'll beat the heat with a whole lot of fun!!! Thanks for sharing a great story and some awesome photos!!!

Torry, as a world champion I know you have probably tried out a lot of different bows & reels. What bow set-up would you recommend?-----Ben Jimmy

One of the good things about bowfishing is that you really don't need anything special. Any old bow & reel combo will work just fine. That said, my personal preference for bows is one that doesn't have a set draw length or let off. This allows you to snap shoot, pluck the string, shoot half draw, full draw, or anywhere in between depending on the shot situation. For night shooting or tournament fishing I prefer a push button style reel like a zebco 808 or 888 because they are much faster to retrieve. For shooting big fish or day fishing where your shots are typically longer I prefer a Retriever (bottle) reel because there's no line drag allowing for longer shots. They're also good for fighting big fish because you can manually control the drag.
