"Value" priced bolt guns?

I see that the manufacturers are bring out value based (cheaper) bolt guns for hunting. Of all these rifles, which one would you buy? Thanks...

Ruger All American
Rem 783
Savage Axis
etc; etc...

Ruger American hands down in my opinion. Of the "value" guns it has the best stock and trigger in my opinion and they have been know for their accuracy since the moment they were released. Throw in the fact that many of the calibers have faster twist barrels than most factory rifles and a 70 degree bolt throw and you have a lot of nice features for the money. They are also supposedly 100% American made.

If you can't already tell I'm a huge fan of these rifles. In my experience they out perform the Savage, Marlin, Mossberg, and Remington rifles of similar price ranges. Granted I have no experience with Remington 783 which is supposed to be a major upgrade over the 770 or the new Axis 2 which is supposed to outperform the Axis.

I stumbled over this new-to-me Ruger All American Predator in .308 Win...threaded barrel with upgraded trigger...

The Predator models are FINE rifles for the money. But the .308 with that 18" barrel is going to sound like a cannon. We went with the .243 instead. And the barrel length was the deciding factor.

I have the Ruger American in 7mm-08 and am paying off the American Predator in 6.5CM this week. The 7mm-08 shoots very well with Hornady Superformance

Savage Axis I have in .223 and .308 and both are very accurate.

No input to offer on the Rem 783 line.

I have a left hand Savage Axis that is very accurate, but I think the Ruger is a better value. For slightly more money, the shooter gets a much better trigger and a better stock, which is still flexxy in the forearm. The Ruger rotary mag is also a plus.

The Ruger American is King of the budget bolt guns. Haven't heard of one yet that didn't shoot better than expected! Great hunting rig if you ask me.

While my Dimension isn't a "value" rifle ($699ish) it is modestly priced. Very accurate. I love being able to swap calibers. I went with this rifle not just for those reasons but at the time Ruger didn't make left handed Americans yet. But I'm glad things turned out the way they did. .308 during the day for deer, swap it over at camp in 3 minutes and head back out for predators. A new barrel/bolt/magazine is around $300. So in comparison you get another rifle for only $300 plus glass.
The axis are nice rifles. Hard to beat for the price. Especially if you're a Southpaw.

A good friend of mine has the 783. I don't have opinions on the others, but i would stay away from these. Has maybe 100 rounds through it and has been to Remington twice. The bolt stop broke off the first time, the second time it wouldnt feed. It was something in the detachable mag system that broke. Remington took care of it free of charge and in a hurry, but still a pain.

It's really only accurate to compare the Ruger American to the Savage Axis 2 with the Accutrigger.

The Ruger American as a base model is the next price step up from the base model Axis, so the cost is significantly higher, but the reason for that cost is obviously the much better trigger. Which Savage addressed with the Axis 2.

I have two of the original Axis models, both stainless, and both have been upgraded to the excellent Rifle Basix adjustable trigger. Both were purchased on sale and even with the addition of the trigger, they are hundreds of dollars cheaper than the next comparable stainless rifle.

Accuracy out of the box is slightly above MOA for REAL (5 shot) groups with factory ammo. With handloads, both rifles are at or just under MOA. This is more than satisfactory for my needs.

I switched to the Axis platform because I just questioned the logic of using my $1000++ rifles to shoot varmints, which I do every summer. It makes no sense to me to burn barrels out of good rifles when the total cost of an Axis would not even by one replacement barrel for my higher end rifles. The Axis is just a better and cheaper solution for me.

I have 2 owned Ruger American Rifles in the past 18 months. The first was in 22-250. My brother also bought that rifle. We both had slight problems with chambering rounds. The tips of several bullets were blunted b/c the mechanism wasn't smooth enough and it would catch the polymer or lead tip as you chambered the round.

The guns were very accurate though. I just purchases the Ruger American Predator in .243. My range report is here:

So far, I have been extremely satisfied. I don't have personal experience with other models.
