"Wood" you do it?

I am having Precision Firearms build my Grendel upper and was just daydreaming on their website when I noticed replacement stocks, grips, and forends for ARs made of wood or laminate wood.

Now Im not saying this is stupid, but it sure makes for a weird looking AR in my opinion.

Would you want wood on your AR?

I like the looks of them, but when you take a close look at the wood thickness at the top of the stock (over the buffer tube), it makes me nervous that it is very thin and weak there. If it was a side-charger, you could beef it up and have something strong, though.

Just my opinion.

I love the look of good wood, but on an AR, only if I were making a 'Show Piece"....I really like the ability of being able to carry/shoot a weapon that I don't have to 'baby', even though I try to take good care if it..

I'd assume it would add even more weight to a heavy gun. Not a big fan of the look, either. Looks like something you'd see in the back of a truck in Afghanistan.

If you could treat the recievers with a shade of brown to sort of match the wood then I don't think it would look to bad.

Then you would have an evil brown rifle instead of black.

I like the looks of it but I would have to be too careful with it. My newly aquired AR sits on the front of my quad and I drag it through the thickets. Afraid I would scratch it.

There is a guy with a walnut stocked AR at our club. Very nice walnut, actually. I think it looks okay. There are plenty of AR type rifles in the world that have wooden stocks on them.

Pesrsonally, it's not for me. My biggest reason would be the heavier weight of the rifle. That and I tend to beat up wooden stocks.

If it was not for the weight, I could probably like the looks of a wooden AR more than I can like a stainless steel/laminated levergun or Ruger #1......

I've been wanting to build a show piece AR just for fun. I would do all the upper, lower, polished aluminum, and a shiney stainless barrel with burlwood furniture. I think it would look really neat. Maybe not though. LOL! I've been wrong before...

P.S. The furniture would be standard furniture dipped in burlwood with a high gloss finish so weight wouldn't be an issue.

Hydro-dip it and keep the benefit of synthetic material. Burl woods, straight woods, diamond plate...all available for substantially less than the price of real wood. The clear coat protects the finish and before it rubs off, you can clear coat it again for even less money.

I like the looks, but would reserve it for a safe queen...not a working carbine/rifle.
Maybe I'll post pics of mine some day.
