This is my first time posting hope the pics come through. Got him yesterday, thee ole caveman way (the almighty club). Couldn't use my 22 mag cuz we had him cornered up under a 1000 gal diesel fuel barrel and that would have been a whole different kind of story. Seen him eating out of the corn ag bag and then the chase was on. There he goes with the dog in hot pursuit across the farm yard into a pile of ahhh spare parts (junk equipment). Now picture this I'm knelt down trying to see under this pile of twisted metal then all of the sudden there I am face to face with snaggle tooth coming at me full speed. There might have been a scream of terror I can't recall as I bailed out of the way. Now back across the farm yard again toward the fuel barrel (dog still thinks he is under the spare parts pile) I get up and check my pants for #1 and #2 then head after him. We played a little round-a-bout then got a shot with the rerod "BAM" game over. I have never seen one this deformed. His left bottom tooth actually grew into his nose and his top right tooth curled back inside his mouth. He was quite skinny for this time of year. All he could eat was the corn he could fish into his mouth with his tongue. Well we'll just say I put him out of his misery. Kind of reminds me of a wild boar. Should make a nice skull mount!!! photobucket

WOW I've never seen one with teeth like that . It must have had an injury that didn't allow it to chew for an extended time and then it was to late to start wearing the teeth down. I've heard of beavers teeth doing something similar if they aren't allowed to chew wood.

Wicked looking for sure.

Here is one I took a few years back.

I'm not sure how he could eat but him mouth was full of clover.

The lower teeth elongated it's nose and were growing through the nose too. The upper teeth were already grown into the roof of his mouth.

That's something. I've hunted groundhogs seriously for probably 30 years or more, and I've only once seen one that had some tusk - smaller than yours.

You did it a favor as it would of died from the teeth going back into the mouth then brain.

It sure is a toothy critter though.

Dont know bout world record but he'll diffently make boone and crockett

I shot a prairie dog like that once. The fangs weren't that long though.
But it was pretty cool to see. I still have the skull somewhere.
I'll try to find it.

I shoot 10-15 of them each spring....an old timer told me that the teeth grow like that when they hibernate and they brake them off in the spring .....I have found them around there holes so this would make scene! that and the fact that about a week or two after they start coming out of there holes I see no more saber tooth G/hogs!

What you're seeing is called Malocclusion. Rodents teeth(opposing incisors) are continually growing and need to be wore down either by chewing on hard objects or by wearing on eachother (aka Occlusion). If the teeth are misaligned and can't wear on eachother the upper teeth will grow around as you see in the picture and eventually pierce the brain resulting in death unless they accidentally (or luckily) break off.

Although the teeth will grow during the winter at a rate greater than their wear rate it takes a very short time in the spring to wear them back down.
