I am new to the AR world and just starting to set up my new R-15 that I got. I was wondering if a nikon coyote 3x9x40 is good scope put on it for varmit hunting. Or is there other optics I should try. I also have a laser genetics desinator also to go along with it. Any help would be helpful. Thanks.

If you like a BDC reticle, the Coyote or the Nikon P223 are decent choices. The M223 has better glass for low light work though. Also take a look at the Leupold Mark AR if you have the budget. Don't skimp on mounts either.
I much prefer a Mil dot over the BDC

Good luck on the Yote thinnin"

Hi i am also new to the ar 15 i was going to get a coyote 3 9x40 but while at bass pro i looked at the new leupold vx r fire dot. In 3 9 x40 and after looking at them both side by side i went ahead and paid more and got the luepold just went to the range today and i have so say i am so happy i got that one. Great scope good luck

My father has the R15 with Coyote scope. Its a nice little combo, Ive shot it a few times and my only complaint is the BDC. I dont like the open dot in the center. Im sure it would work on coyotes but it is practically useless (for me at lest) on gophers much past 75 yards. I can hit them 50 and under but I have a hard time when they get out there.

Maybe its just something you need to learn on and shoot a lot but I want to save ammo and shoot one time and know where I am hitting. If they put a center dot or a fine crosshair in that scope I would buy one in a heart beat. Maybe an illuminated center dot and I think you would have one sweet coyote scope.

I have the Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50 AO Mil.- Dot Illuminated Reticle on my R-15. I love Vortex Optics, just my opinion. Take a look at it, then decide.

I have the coyote special in 4.5-14 on my R-15. At first I didn't like it at all. It was harder to sight in because of the open circle. I was basically centering a circle ( the target) inside another circle ( the scope). After 3/4" inch groups at 100 yards I decided that it might not be so bad. I love the scope now. It is really quick to get on target and accurate too.

I put a Leupold vx-r on mine. 3-9x40. I used to shoot a lot of higher power scopes like the 6.5-20. I got used to the lower power. It is more comfortable to shoot because you don't see your movement as much
