Rabbit decoy

I got started on my rabbit skin decoy 2 days ago. I grabbed a road kill rabbit and skinned him. I did not bother with messing with the nose and just pulled the skin off. I scraped the pelt and then salted it twice then stretched it for one day. I sewed the mouth and nose shut and then partially sewed the eyes shut and put push on cats eyes on him. Unfortunately his lower half ended up pretty bad. I tried to stretch the skin over my little motorized dog but the head was to big. So I am going to have to come up with something else. I cant wait to see him get attacked. Also thinking of doing a plaster cast of a rabbit body to make a decoy from and then motorizing it. The ears lay back to easy so they need to be pinned, epoxied or wired up. Im kicking my self for not making one years ago. Even one just filled with news paper or foam. Ive got him finish drying right now full of newspaper to dry with more of a round shape. Look out here come Pepe the rabbit /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif.

Ya, I know! I'm one of the guys that always looks for those pics. I'll have to take some pics tomarrow and then load my camera software and upload a few pics. Right now Pepe is no more than a hand pupet and his lower half was run over by a car /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif, So he is missing a little fur. Im planning on either making a small body or adding another rabbit pelt to bring Pepe to life.

The upper half was not quite drying yet so I tipped him forward to keep the ears up so hopefully they dry up nice and high.

Pepe is looking really good.

Put it on your boot like a slipper and wiggle while coaxing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I had a few hard chargers, last week, that would of swiped it right off my boot.

You did good!

From my experience(ive used plastic squirrels) they dont even look twice at the plastic decoys once they get in close. I wanted something that will make them almost attack. I want to really see some action. Should be good with this one, Ill let ya know once i start hunting at the end of Nov. I really dont care for the action on the quiver rabbit. And so for I probably have $5 invested in my little walking dog.
In sewing you just turn him inside out while still wet and sew away and when you turn him right side out you dont see anything.

Well, you may have misunderstood me. I was not suggesting the Quiver Rabbit as a similar decoy to what you are making. I was suggesting the Quiver Critter . The motion is significantly different, and the decoy itself is very realistic made with synthetic Rabbit Fur. It does not have eyes, but they would be very easy for someone to add. And for 20bucks, you really can't go wrong. The post was more for providing info to others that maybe have not had the success making their own that you have had. The decoy you have constructed is truly awesome. I love it and would definitely go that way if i were you.

Great looking rabbit! The Quiver Critter also looks awesome. The fur looks like real rabbit fur, at $20 bucks that's hard to beat. Love the Wounded Woodpecker. It’s nice to see decoys that actually look like real animals.

No skill envolved, very easy to make. All I did was skin him down to the nose then pull. Next I sewed most of the face shut, Ive never sewn before, it went fine. The ears have curled a little but are still good. I tried to flesh him but only damaged the plet in trying. Adding the eyes are the biggest addition, they really set it off. In the next few days Im going to dampen the skin inside the head, get the ears standing up real high and then pour a little epoxy in that part of the head. I wish I had more rabbits around here to do another but it will have to wait till i get out hunting. As for now I just sit the whole rabbit right on my little motoeized dog and when the shakes his head the rabbit bobs back and forth. I will sew the rabbit skin to the dog so a hawk doesnt carry the skin away.
