rabbit dogs

i want to get 1 dog to run rabbits, but i dont know what breed would be best. i have never trained a dog to do anything but fetch dead dove. i would like a breed that is easy to train. any ideas are great, thanks

I really dont know anyone that hunts anything other then beagles or beagle/blueticks. They pretty much train themselves they either have it or dont. Breaking them from other game can sometimes be a process.

Minature dauchsund {weiner dog} They say they make excellent rabbit dogs, really get in the thick stuff and brush piles because of their small size. Jamie

thanks, and are they pretty easy to train? like could i pick up a puppy from the pound and train them to hunt or does it have to be bread into them?

i wouldnt recommend one from the pound bc you dont know if its truly full blooded or not. id get one full blooded or registered with either akc or ukc.

I to would not recommend a dog from the pound Especially a beagle because it could be a deer runner and the owner either could not find the dog or said the heck with it.
Now as far as the " AKC/UKC" statement goes I would look for a grade dog that is to tall or has to much pink on his nose, or an over bite as these dogs will be cheaper if not free from the breeder and will hunt the same as any of its litter mates I would however have the dog fixed so as to not pass on any bad genes. you should also ask to see the parents hunt as this will be a good way to see the pups genes at work.

Now lets talk about the "full blooded beagle" comment because some of the best rabbit dogs I've owned have been crossed with blueticks and even curs. my current rabbit/squirrel dog is jack russell mix and he gets the job done.

Good luck in your search and post a picture of your dog when you get him or her.

Matt, here is some extra advice. My Grandpa raised beagles all his life.He gave me a pup when I was a kid.Mine was the best gun dog that me or Grandpa ever saw.Except,he didn't listen to well on commands. OK, first, get a copy of the magazine"Hounds and Hunting".You only want a dog out of gun dog stock.Field trial dogs are just too slow. They call them"walkie talkies".Get a good bloodline dog. I suggest a pup out of 'Yellow Creek' stock. When you do get a pup, training him is as simple as this...Teach him to come when called! Very important. Then, find a yard where rabbits come out to eat in the evening. Carry your pup towards the rabbit where nothing blocks his view.Keep easing toward the bunny and it will eventually run.You will know if your dog sees it by the way he perks up. Let him down and he will run after it. The rabbit will scoot into cover, forcing your dog to hunt for it with his nose. Keep doing this,he will get the hang of it. This method also teaches your dog to search the brush, saving you hours of jumping on brush piles. Good luck.

Go to http://forums.ukcdogs.com/index.php?s= there's a forum on just beagles used to have a good Bassett hound to see him movearound in the house you wouldn't believe that he would run hares in the snow. Have a buddie that bred an english coon hound to a beagle for longer legs in the snow she's a great rabbit dog.

stay away from pound dogs, like stated above there is a reason they are there.as well as stay away from the --i found a stray--same reason.
whatever ya get your will surely need some kind of e collar and how to use it .
watch out on any website that promotes feild trails etc.alot of them guys are just like a puppy mill themselves and will take advantage of antone.if you do look into a trail bred dog,ask the breeder why he/she aint keeping the dog.i know of none that will sell pups outta of a breeding that they really wanted to make.
what i would do is go to a couple hunting /beagle sites and ask for folks that are in your area that you want to go/learn/look into getting a dog.ask to meet them and hunt.ask questions about the terminology they use.TELL THEM YOU ARE NOT LOOKING TO INVADE ON THIER HUNTING SPOT.
here are a couple i recommend.they cover many states

remember -beware of those that offer you a dog right away,do some reaserch first, alot of dogs are givern/sold cause for some reason the owner doesnt want to keep it.

matt- I have always kept, and trained rabit dogs, and i agree with jbmaster. he gave great advice. Here are a fiew things that i like to do, maybe it will help you. First things first, keep your dog away from straingers. if they dont see anyone but you for a long time, chances are none else will be able to catch them, just the way i like em. Not only for people trying to steel a good bunny dog, but if you hunt by many roads, people see a cute little beagle, and think its lost, and may pick it up. bad for you! Second, i have made a habit of leaving about 100 feet of small roape tied to the dogs collar when starting them, and try to work in a field, especially if using a shock collar, beagles can be very timmid, and want to hi tail it when shocked. Sometimes i will also catch a rabit in a trap for a puppy, and tie its legs together with string so it can out run the dot, but not by much, some dogs it helps with, some dogs dont need it. just depends on the dog. Last but not least. I recomend you teach your dog the meaning of DOWN!! I use this comand with all my beagles. makes it alot easier to catch them, no mater what may be runing in front of them. How to teach them is up to you, It sounds crude, but my favorite method is to throw my leash in front of them while they are runing, and yell down. Like i said earlier, beagles are usully timid, and will lay down on their bellys, and hold still for a second, be fast, and grab him, and praise him, soon all you will have to do is say down anytime, and he will stop where he is. this can be very handy. Hope i helped. If i can help more, feel free to pm me.

mattb---there are several styles/types of trail dogs,i run a few trails and my dogs are far from slow,as well as far from being fast, they are medium.
i wouldnt hunt anywhere near roads to even have a possibility of a accident/dognapping and i will never run a hound of any type without a e collar.
just me though.
if ya want check out some of my clips with my dogs.
