The entire deer season I am out on the property I mark trees that have a hole in them that look like den trees. I have been to every one of my marked spots and nothing.

I don’t think I am finding good den trees.

I am in Virginia - a mix of pine forest and oaks/swamps.

Saving the turkeys is one of the reasons I am doing this. Our hunting lease is on the edge of town and close to some residential areas. We have an UNLIMITED supply of raccoons. One side of our property borders land designated as a wildlife refuge- it is physically impossible to make a large dent in my coon population!!!

2 years ago I trapped about 40 of them in 2 weeks with dog proofs. I had no idea what I was doing as a trapper and had zero scent control. Every check had at least 4 - with only 10 traps out!

I’m loaded with coons, but sure can’t call them out of a tree!
 
I just purchased a Bergara BMR 22 Mag. and can't wait to get out there with my Icotec caller and try this!!! (y)
I've watched almost all of the videos from MC Squallers. :cool:
 
All coon dens have trails to them. Learn how to id coon trails. Call dens, on warming trends. Or days the wind has been slowing in the afternoon. Coon will spook if they see you move or smell you.

When I started years ago I used a 22 lr and my dad used a 22 mag. 22 lr just isn't enough. I switched to a 22 mag and had much better luck although I was getting exit wounds more often than not. Decided to try a 17hmr and love it. Knocks them down without the exits. Dad switched to a 17 WSM which worked great but would get pretty bad blowouts on marginal hits. If you're not saving hides none of that matters though. We call den trees, so most of our shots are 15-30 yards while they are still in the tree and not moving as much/fast. Just my experience, gotta find what works for you and your style of hunting.
