raccoon egg trap - good??

I have a question about a trap called the EGG TRAP. It is used to only catch coons. I was wondering if anyone has ever used this trap and how good it worked. I just ordered 2 of them. I needed some more traps because coon prices are high around here. I got $15 for a thirty pound coon, $12 for another coon, $5 for another, and $5 for a coon I found dead in a snowbank.

In my opinion, if I was going to buy more dog proof traps I would buy either the Lil Griz or Cooncuffs. The Egg Trap may be a good trap, but there is to much monkeying around to it, you need to have a seperate setter for it. Just my thoughts on it. Tim

coyotecontrol,

I make my regular footholds into dog proof traps. I use PVC Pipe end caps. Just get one that will fit outside the jaws when set. Then drill an 1" or 1 1/2" hole in the center. I file down the edge of the caps so that it will fit over the levers. You'll need to dig a hole deep enough that the cap is level with the ground, then put your bait on the pan. The coons will reach through the hole to get at the bait and get caught. The caps acts as a cuff and will stop most chewing or twist offs.

Works great and save money on buying species specific traps. Anything that save on the pocket book is alright with me.

Longbow , what size pipe for what size trap do u use , a 1 coilspring has a 4" jaw spread which means the levers are close to 6" inches, or do u notch for the levers?? I use DP traps ( $10.95 ea) and Grizz Getrz ($20.00 ea)and they both work well where dogs are a problem.....B.....

I have 6 egg traps, and haven't caught anything with them. Granted, I haven't used them on every line, but I have set them in some hotspots. They are a pain in the rear to set, and dangerous if you're not careful. Be careful with those things! In short, they haven't paid for themselves yet.

The Egg Traps are coon catchers when you use and handle them properly - just like any other trap system. Many, many trappers and ADC folks use this tool consistently to catch raccoon and resolve nuisance animal complaints. The Egg trap is a tool for a trappers tool box. You have to know what you're doing with the equipment and be able to adapt to the ever changing habits of raccoon. It's a high quality tool that allows you to sleep at night knowing it won't get you in trouble by a non-target catch. Yep, it needs a plate holder and setting tool to make setting/un-setting the tool an efficient process. I'm not sure where you ordered them from, but if you would like some help in getting started the right way, let me know. You can check things out " on the web" and you might inquire about an "Egg Trapping Basics" video too.

Have fun out there! Catch 'ya, Rick

Brian,
I notch the cap to fit over the levers. A 4" end cap should work for #1 traps with a 4" jaw spread. To be sure I would measure the ID on the end cap at the hardware store.

Tim,
I will try to post a picture of the setup I use if I can figure out how to use the Wife's digital.

I just tried these traps out and thought I would share the information. I HAD a coon in my trap the day after I set it up, but the coon pulled the top off and now is running through the country side with my expensive egg trap on his hand. The screw holes to put the screws in where not lined up in the trap so I couldn't put them in but I thought it would hold. This is probably why he got away. So to anyone using the EGG TRAP be shure to put the screws in or the coon will run off with the trap. Other than that this trap works great.
