Ranger 4X4 what tires

I have a Ranger 4x4 . I want to drive logging& Back roads in Forest and deserts. What tires? I have a Costco membership. they offer BF Good Rich and Michelin off road tires. However they need to be grate on HWYs for work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
 
BFG All Terrain KO. Great wear, nice ride, but tons of traction. It is also one of a few that have a three ply sidewall. Hopefully you can get them at Costco. I don't know if they have the mainstream BFG or just the poopie stuff like Sam's and Walmart.

If that doesn't pan out, check out a Cooper dealer and look at the Discoverer ST. Awesome tire. Very stable and tons of traction. It is a little snottier than the BFG and therefore a little noiser. They hold up so well that our city fleet and Utility Company both use them on their trucks including the bucket trucks. Our Division of Wildlife uses them also. They are pinned for studs, but obviously should not be studded unless they are to be used for winter tires only.

+1 for the Cooper Discoverer ST's. I have them on my Cummins powered Dodge 2500 4x4. They have held up great under the weight of the Cummins motor, and they wear great and get unreal traction, even while plowing snow, and getting through the mud.

I had three sets of Coopers, two sets had a tire fail when half wore out, so I had to buy new set. When putting on a spare tire I noticed the wore out Michlen was 1" taller than the brand new Cooper, same number tires! Maybe that is why some have rearend problems. I found out I lost 1 mpg with the shorter Coopers. The wore out Michlens rode much better than the Coopers, also.
I can't afford 200+$ for Michlens, so I tried the Firestone Transforce tire, 55,000 miles on them now, it is a tall tire, too. Any 4x4 tire that gets 50,000 mile is not bad for wear. Last winter the two thirds worn tires and Cummins engine got me through some deep drifts on the closed rural roads, suprised even me! Thought for sure I might be shoveling for a half mile. I was down to second gear at 2700-3000rpms, with manual trans.

Too bad Costco probably won't special order tires. Because I suggest using Super Swampers.
Do you have a credit card?
If so, pick up a copy of Peterson's 4-Wheeler mag.
Search the tire ads.
You'll likely find Super Swamper TSL Radials in a size 30x9.50x15 or smaller {they will fit a stock rim}, cheaper than any tire you buy in a store.(they even make them in a 14"...like 215x75x14)
Yes, if you go this route, you have to find a place to install them & have that expense.
BUT, if your area is like it is here, every tire store is charging an extra seperate price for mount/balance even if you buy the tires from that store.
 
Dads Ranger wears Big O Bigfoot A/T 225/75 R16. I've takin his truck gettin wood. Never had no problems gettin to where I needed to get to, as long as it wasn't to awful truck damaging bad. The tires are just fine on the hiway too.

Ive had really really bad luck with BFG all terrains. I have a 4runner that I ran BFGs on, lots of tread left but it seems everytime I go down a gravel road one gets a rock through the tread. One of the tires has three plugs in it, and another one has one. If you can afford it get the coopers or the michlens.
 
I just got some maxxis bighorns, there more of a mud terrain but I like them so far. A little whine on the highway but not bad at all. I had BFG mud terrains before and they were great, except they are pretty soft and wear fast.
 
FYI, Michelin owns BFG. They are both excellent as long as you use them for the intended purpose! Bottom line, buy what you want! Buy it from a reputable place that will stand behind what they sell!
 
Been running Cooper 10 ply for years. They run great down the hwy and very thorn resistant,,, something we have to have in West Texas.
 
Take a look at the General Grabber AT2's. I've had a couple sets and have been pleased with them. Good traction, durable off road, and decent on the hiway. I'll by another set when the new pickup is ready for new shoes.
 
I have a set of BGF A/T's on my 99 Wrangler. I've been very satisfied with them. I was reeally surprised how well they did last year druing my elk hunt. Four days of rain and the roads were like fudge, but they soldiered onward. I wouldn't recommend them as mud tires, though. Here in So Az they work very well in the sand washes and desert roads.

Heads up that Costco won't install other than stock sizes if you were expecting to go to a larger size.

I got mine at Discount Tires. I haven't been to one that didn't have excellent service.

+1 Toyos MTs are the best, but I don't know if Costco carries them.
 
The Toyo Open Country AT's and Nitto Terra Grapplers are for sure worth a look. No more than the BFG's or Cooper's pricewise but they do lack the Tri-Guard sidewall.

My first set of tires on my dodge were the nitto grapplers. I will never buy them again. After about 10k they started cupping something horrible. I had my front end checked twice and both times it was perfect. I had to replace them around 19k. I bought a set of toyo open country and havent looked back. I know the nitto's are made by Toyo but they fell short in my book. The toyos are spendy but worth it though.

+1 the maxxis is the only set of tires that ive gotten more than 20k miles out of. im at 22k and still have 1/3 of the tread left
