So there’s a couple county owned properties here in NY that I occasionally call for coyotes on that is local to me. 2 parcels with a nice mix of fields, mature hardwoods and some thick conifers and both have creekbeds running through them. These properties see some decent hunting pressure for both deer and small game during their respective seasons. They are suddenly no longer accessible, and being cleared.
A large employer to our region is Chobani, makers of some pretty delicious Greek Yogurt. They are expanding operations and are building a new Billion dollar facility in Rome NY on the old Griffiss Air Force Base. Well apparently because of this, and because of the land being consumed by the project, county officials have decided to clear these two other properties (that are not on Griffiss by 10 miles) of all trees and shrubs to create grassland nesting habitat for Sand Pipers!
I do not buy this for a minute! I think it’s a diversion to simply clear the land for future solar projects. Why do I think this? Well because every other county property in a 5 mile radius of this has been transformed into solar fields over the last 7 years or so. Hundreds of acres literally within 2 miles of these two properties. It’s ridiculous to ruin such a diverse environment that holds an abundance of wildlife, and provides public access to many hunters in the name of habitat improvement for Sand Pipers. A single bird! In five years it’ll be determined a failed project, not producing the expected results and turned into solar fields!
I hate this State more and more as time goes on.
