RCBS Supreme Master reloading kit

I am really interested in learning the basics of reloading. I talked with a guy today that recommended the Rock Chucker and the master supreme kit. I looked it up on cabelas and it says the kit comes with a RC Supreme press, based on, but not the Rock Chucker. Is this a good kit, and is the press as good as the chucker? Thanks, I should add that I have never reloaded, and would like to buy good stuff from the start so I don't have to upgrade immediately.

Yes this is a good kit and will make good reloads. My old hunting partner brought down his RCBS electronic powder dispenser and scale and his RCBS Case prep center for me to use. The case prep center is something I wouldn't buy til I found out how useful it is and the electronic powder dispenser give me the most uniform loads I've ever made. RCBS makes a kit with the electronic powder dispenser and scale in the kit. You might take a look at that one.

Basically all the equipment on the market makes good ammo. Consumers have pretty well sorted out the stuff that doesn't work.

Good luck with reloading, I've been doing that for 45 years or so and it's sure increased the amount and quality of ammo I've been able to shoot for my shooting dollar.

You are starting a journey that will last you for years. Yea that kit will serve you well. Just do yourself a favor and get at least 2 manuals, and read the reloading instructions in them at least a couple times before you even open the box that your press comes in. It will teach you about reloading along with all the items in the box, and some that are not, and how to properly use them. Very important.

Then read this, huge mountains of information here.

Agreed with Furhunter on getting several manuals. Then you can take an "average". You just can't go wrong with an RCBS setup, although I prefer Redding or Forster dies and use a Dillon scale when I trust it. If I don't, I go back to the 5-0-5 scale that I have had for years. In fact, when the beam started sticking, I sent it back to RCBS to reman it. I have had this scale for 11 years. I sent a note telling them to call me with an estimate. They never called me, but they did send me back a brand new scale. Free. That should tell you a bit about RCBS. Good luck.

The difference with the Rock Chucker and the Rock Chucker Supreme is that the Supreme can do longer catridges due to an increased window size. That kit is a great kit and includes most items you will need to reload the two main tools that the kit doesn't include are a case trimmer and a pair of calipers, if you are going to reload bottleneck catridges you will need those items as well. (You will need the calipers to check overall length of the completed catridge even if it is new brass you may be able to get a couple loadings out of your brass before you need the trimmer)

Turbo is right about the calipers and trimmer ; but you can buy the Lee hand trimmers for the calibers you are loading for for about $5 .These trimmers cut the brass down to the recommended trim to length .I have been loading since 1974 and I still use these regularly .I have a Lyman trimmer but if you are only loading 20 or so I use the Lee's . I often only load small numbers in the load developement phase .The RCBS kit is great . You might go to midway and see if there is a Lee , Redding ,or Lyman kit available.A good place to get Calipers for the right price is Harbor Freight . You can usually get digital stainless ones for about $15 when they run a sale ( which is about once a month).

Thanks for the help guys. I think I will start with a book or two, before the kit. That way I can't put the cart before the horse and start playing with it till I have a little understanding of the process.

The absolute best thing you could ever do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

buy the kit first it will have one of the best manual made included in the kit. that will save you some money. only if you think you are really serious about reloading. go to walmart and pick up an issue of reloader magazine. there is some good stuff in there.
i started out with the lee loading kit and it was fine. it loaded so really nice stuff. but shooting and guns is what i do so i like to have the best that my money will buy. rcbs has been good to me and they make a good product. lee

You may want to look into the Lyman or Lee manuals. They go into a fair amount of detail on reloading and are a great reference, especially the Lyman. Check ebay, you can get some steals on there for used manuals.
