Re-born Winchester 190

First of all, I'm no Sodakjim who does amazing stuff with restoring old rifles here on PM. That out of the way, here we have an old Winchester 190 that has been in my family for as long as I can remember. It stopped working about a year ago and was put in the back of the closet until earlier this month.
I took the rifle apart, and I mean apart, from top to bottom, except the sights. It was filthy, never been cleaned I guess. Well I cleaned all the innards and put them all back where they were supposed to go and re did the stock as well as I could,(it was an ugly turd brown color when I started with it).

Day before yesterday I got the whole thing back together and put a magazine full through it and she runs as smooth as an old Winchester 190 is supposed to.

Here are some pics, sorry, I don't have before pictures:

p.s.
if you have a 190 and disassemble it, take off the stock to replace the spring, it saves tons of agravation.

I have a rifle identical to that but mine is labeled Sears Roebuck. I bought it in college for $20, I didn't know it is a Winchester. Very Cool!! Wanna do another one?

LOOKS GREAT!

Nice work trashcan...mohawk too. I have been after the wife for a week now to give me a haircut...no mohawk for me though, just the 3/8 guard all around

BTW- I know it`s not the case with your rifle, but whenever I see anything with a new finish applied to it, the antique show comes to mind where the appraiser says...,"well in the restored condition as it is its valued at 3,000.00,...now you see under here if it still had that turd brown color, well then it would be woth 175,000".

Nice Job.... I've found that many "Non-working" firearms with suddenly come back to life with just a really good cleaning, unless something is obviously broken..

funny thing i just bought one of those for 75dollars... boy said it wouldnt shoot. i put two rounds through it at 25and they were both touching just about 2 inches to the right. i would imagine that after seeing the inside of it it hasnt been cleaned in many years. it is going to be a weekend project soon

Nice Job Trashcan.

I like to see old guns brought back from the brink. Most of the guys I know around here in South Dakota have far more use for utilitarian guns. It's only rare that I find someone who goes for the real fancy stuff. I fix up a lot of the Plain Jane working guns that have suffered from neglect as well.

Occasionally I get involved with a family heirloom where I pull out all the stops.

I also like to cruise the out of the way gun and pawn shops for bargains or classic guns worth the effort to restore.

I taught my wife to shoot with a Winchester very similar to yours. We just passed our 44th anniversary yesterday and she still likes to shoot the .22 rimfires.

Keep up the good work.

Nice gun Trashcan, that was my second gun 36 years ago and it still is in action. I don't mean to hijack your post. Mine's due for a good scrubbing also, since I have the week off it's about time.

Well I just tore mine down and gave it a good scrubbing, about 36 years of powder built up. Thanks to Trash for the motivation.

All good OZ man!!
Did you remove the stock to replace the spring?? Before I figured that out it gave me fits trying to get that long bugger back in the hole. I tried all sorts of things and couldn't get my fumble fingers to get it to work. That's when I decided to redo the stock and once I had it off the light bulb came on and getting it back in was a snap!!
I get to take mine to the ranch this next weekend and I'm gonna wring it out!!
Have a good one!!

Nice tip on removing the stock that will save me alot of time and frustation. I've been shooting my old 190 for 20 years and its killed thousands of critters. The coolist thing about mine is it will cycle 22 shorts all day long.

I grew up with a 190, that darn little charging handle would fall out all the time. Got to the point I would carry a framing nail to charge it.
It was completely worn out by the time I got to use it. My dad had 9 brothers, and that gun was always around. Any way it got to where you would pull the trigger and it would empty the tube. After about 2 times dad cut it in half with the torch. Well thats my 190 story, watch that charging handle.

After I took it apart it took me two days to find the spring nylon guide that went flying. #$%^&*() After I located it I took your suggestion and removed the stock. Mine's still that ugly brown but I don't mind. After a half bottle of hoppes and a shirt I got it done. I got a brick set aside for sunday.

I never knew to take the stock off mine either THANK YOU! I dreaded cleaning that [beeep] thing because of that spring...
