Reasons to buy a 22 mag??

I was shooting a friends marlin 22 mag the other day......now I want one but I just cant justify it. I have a .223 that I use for coyotes and fox but would a 22 mag be able to kill one within 100 yards? It just seems that it would be fun to own one. Any 22 mag owners out there??

I have a marlin bolt gun in a 22wmr. Great little round. Haven't shot much with it, but my boy loves shooting it. He's 10 and it's been a great rifle to teach him to shoot with. I know for sure, out to 150 yards or so, I would not want that little dude shooting at me! As far as excuse to get one.. Simple. Its fun to shoot!

I have a Marlin 882SSV in 22 mag, this is just a fun gun to shoot. Yes I have a 223 also but the 22 mag is alot queiter on the ears.

It's a "just because" gun. Fun to shoot, cheap compared to centerfire rounds, but it still has enough snot for short range coyote hunting.

Reasons to buy a 22 mag?? Uh...because you don't have one??

Or, there's one on the shelf at the gun store for sale?

Or, you shot your friend's .22 mag and now you WANT one!!!

For years I poo-poo'ed the 22 Mag.. Then after a brief love affair wth a 17 HMR I bought a CZ 455, in 22 mag. it is now my favorite rifle.. And when my sons come home and we go shooting I can hardly get any trigger time on the mag.. The boys won't give it back..

I "poo-poo'ed" them also because my first magnum rimfire was a 17HMR. I now have a Marlin and while I still like my HMR better, it does not go un-used. I camo'd it up with Krylon so it could live in the truck and not rust. I think it is even quieter then my HMR, and with Hornady ammo shoots 3 shot MOA groups at 100 yards.

Reason #1 , you don't have one.
Reason #2 , same as reason #1.

It's a gun, you don't need a reason. 40 million gun owners can't be wrong.

The best way to justify a 22WMR is to get ya a Cur dog and start chasing Cats.

I love the round. Had one in one form or the other since I was in high school.
The Henry in the pic is my current one, but I just ordered a Single Six with 22WMR cylinder to try this year. I'll still carry the lever gun just in case though.

If ya just want one for plinkin, a lever gun will sure bring out the kid in ya.

Fun for whackin Gophers too.

I think you need one.

I had a stainless Ruger years ago with the boat paddle stock. I killed a ton of critters with that rifle. Then I sold it and bought a Marlin 882SSV. It shot really good, and after a trigger job and glass bedding it shot better.

I have killed dozens of critters with it. Fox, coyotes, coons, ringtail cats, bobcats, snakes, 300lb boar hogs... I will never be without my 22 mag.
Mine likes the black box Winchesters.

I love the .22 mag round, I have taken coyotes, foxes and porcupines with it. I am getting ready to chop the barrel down and thread it, for a suppressor........then I will be a happy man.

RePete, I want one like yours though. That is one sweet little rig. Is it a Marlin?

Its great for jack rabbits if you don't reload. Or taking heads off cottons. Also good for coons, maybe bobcats.

if you reload your .223 can go from .22lr, on up to 22mag, all the way through hornet and .222.

I am a firm believer the more trigger time on the same gun the better you get. Changing guns all the time is detrimental.

Of course a shiney new gun is always exciting, but will it help you as much as 500 dollars more ammo down the pipe of your current gun?

I have a ruger bolt 22 mag and love it I have killed lots of critters with it and a 10 shot group is 1 ragged hole at 50 yards
Ammo is 10 for 50 rounds don't think you can get 223 ammo even close to that

No,,, it's a Henry Frontier model. Most accurate 22WMR I've ever owned, but just like most guns manufactured today, it's got it's fair share of cost-cutting cheap parts.
Smooth as silk and trouble free so far though.
Just wish I'd have bought the lower priced carbine, because the cheap finish doesn't stand up to hard use very well. Hate to be beat a pretty gun up like I do chasing those potlickers, but it is what it is at this point.
I'll never get rid of it.

TripleDeuce,,,, I know an old guy up on the Canadian border that has a boat load of the prettiest Bobcat pelts I've ever seen. The only gun he owns is a 22WMR. It's a favorite of Lion hunters around here too, but that's another thread.

I never owned a .22 mag until I became interested(obsessed lol) with coyote hunting. The ammunition costs always seemed too high when compared to the .22lr. And if more power was needed there is the .223 ect. However I bought one for 'legal' reasons as there are certain times of the year in TN that a rimfire or shotgun must be used for coyotes. After some experience with it I like the round and can see its 'place' in the grand scheme of things. I haven't killed a coyote with it yet but have no doubts that it will work fine out to 125yds or so. TTT
