Reasons to buy a 22 mag??

I have a Marlin .22 WMR and love it. They will drop a coyote with no problem but you have to make a good hit on them. Sprayin and prayin won't work with the .22 mag.

I've got a rem 22 mag and I love it. It does great for coons, rabbits, squirrels, and any other little critters. Everyone should have a 22 mag.

The .22 magnum is a great all-around pest/varmint round. More range/energy than a .22 LR, but no felt recoil, moderate muzzle blast, and plenty of power to drop most pests out to 100 yards, maybe a little more. I have killed two coyotes with mine, one at 40 yards, the other at 95 yards. The 40-yarder was broadside, perfect double-lung hit, and she ran about 50 yards before piling up. The 95-yarder was a frontal chest hit and she fell in her tracks.

I won't be without one.....

I use mine mainly for night hunting. In most places I hunt, a 100 yard shot at night is pretty much all you are gonna get or need to ethically take. And it knocks a coon out of a tree really well also.

Have 2 22mag that started out life as 17hmr but were rebarreled to 22mag and the kids love them. They shoot great and won't cost you an arm and leg to go shoot.

Fox and bobcat are rimfire or shotgun with no buckshot down here. Just makes a good closer range gun that you can afford the ammo to shoot.....and then shoot some more.

I own two .22 mags and wish I had a third. Quiet and deadly on coons and fox. Get it and don't look back.

Seriously,,, It really is the best small game round out there IMO.
And by "small game" I mean up to Coon and Cat sized critters.

The only reason I don't have a 22 Mag is I got a Hornet before I looked at the 22 mag although now that I think of it I may just need to get one

Get one! I shoot my 22 mag almost every day. The Marlin bolts are great. Super short bolt throw and accurate. The Magnum Research are awesome if you can find one. I use mine on raccoons. Works like a charm. You won't regret buying one.

All this love for the .22M I just don't get. Yes it has more power than a .22lr but it's much, much closer to it's little brother than even the smallest centerfires. In handguns it's cost vs. capabilities when compared to the .38sp and the 9mm makes it look like a sick puppy.

Yes, if I wasn't a reloader I may still have one. But a .22lr will do everything the .22M will do within 75 yards, for plinkin the lr is clearly the choice due to cost and for anything a .22lr won't do I can do with handloaded centerfire better than a .22M at no additional cost. In handguns I can do better at about 60% of the cost.

I'll admit that if I was limited to one rifle for squirrel to coyote a .22m might make a decent choice but I'm not limited to one gun. And still, I think I'd rather have a downloaded centerfire.

The only reason I can find to like the .22M has nothing to do with the cartridge but instead with some of the guns it's chambered in. Smaller, lighter, handier and cheaper than comparable centerfires discribes many of the guns it comes in. But then again, the same can be said for the the guns of the .22lr.

Sorry for all the hate

I really love the 17HMR for prairie dogs..as long as you're not fighting a significant crosswind you can get kills out farther than you think and it's just a hoot.

However, I use my tricked out 10/22Mag for Yotes during deer season when I cannot carry a centerfire, and I use it for shooting coons because it has enough WOMP and I don't like shooting centerfire rounds at steep angles towards the sky, even in rural settings.

I also have a stainless S&W kit gun/six shooter that is a beautiful, fun gun that is no longer made. Only problem is it is really loud.

I think I really need a 22 magnum because my 17hmr(17HAMMER) just does too much damage on water buffalo sized game. lol
I've never owned one, but really do want one.

CCI .22 Velocitor at 75 yards = 106 ft/lbs
CCI .22M 40gr. HP at 125 yards = 119 ft/lbs
40gr. .22 Hornet at 200 yards = 268 ft/lbs.

Like I said, the .22M is much much closer to the LR than any centerfire. I used 125 yards for the .22M because many will tout it as the maximum range for use on predators and it is also it's 3" MPBR.

As for close up shots. I've never seen a dramatic, if any, increase in damage or reaction to raccoons (some topping 30lbs) with the .22M as compared to a Velcitor 10 - 30 yards. A solid hit provides pretty much identical results. Same for a not so solid hit.

Basically if you think a .22m is a 125 yard gun than you have to conclude that a .22lr is a 75 yard gun on identical game. Maybe the extra 50 yards and a slight increase in damage at closer range is worth the cost of a gun and pricier ammo to you but it ain't to me. I'll stick with LR's and centerfires.

Go to Cci and crunch the numbers. 22mag is in the 300ft lb range.

I can tell a huge difference on a fox, on a beaver, pigeons, squirrels, coons and opossums. Not a slight difference. A HUGE difference.

Don't you think some of that has to do with being designed with a fast expanding copper jacket?
