rebarrel help

Do any of you have any experience getting a rifle rebarrled from Hart or Kreiger? I have a remington 700 .243 that that has now been passed down three generations. I want to get it rebarreled for my son's 14th birthday. Both barrel makers are top notch...but we all know the guy screwing it into the action is just as important. Have any of you used either of these companies for their work?

I haven't used either, but wouldn't hesitate to.
The good thing about having the manufacturer do the install is that there's no finger pointing should a problem arise.

I also doubt that either of them would hire a hack. This is a pretty small market (especially with the WWW) and word gets around pretty fast.
Their names are really all they have, if ya know what I mean.

Hart has an outstanding reputation for gunsmithing as well as a barrel maker. They made their name chambering and barreling in the benchrest circles. I wouldn't be afraid to use them. I don't know anything about Kreiger as far as the gunsmithing goes.

If I had to chose between the two, I would go with a Krieger for the simple reason, I feel their cut rifled barrels last a little longer than the pull buttoned rifled barrels.

As far as their gun smithing abilities, I have no experience with either company as I have a very good smith that does my work. I am sure either company would do a superb job for you. Like state above, all they have is their name and reputation.
Hope this helps some.

Check out McGowen! They are now making pre-chambered barrels for the Rem 700 that utilize a nut just like the Savage rifles. In fact they use the same nut wrench as the Savage.

Tool up and you can do your own barrel swap.

Imagine a Rem 700 switch barrel?

For what it is worth. Most Across-The-Course shooters(the largest competitive shooting class) feel the same. Cut rifled barrels last a little longer.
I have used Krieger barrels for over 25 years and even had them build an AR upper for me. I once even sent a barrel back and they replaced it, no questions asked.

Alot would depend on what barrel contour you want to match. Kreiger not bluing anymore and they only do SS barrel #5 and up. Hart might be able to match contour with a SS barrel so won't have that extra cost.

Both are good barrels and their turn around time might be less than a gunsmith.

Just by the hart or whatever and send it to sid goodling in pennsylvania. He really does a great job. After all this is a hunting rifle I assume ,and even if it isnt sid is very reasonable and does fine work. You should of stated whether you are hunting or benchrest shooting.I personally think keigers are great barrels but way overpriced for any reason for hunters. If you just want a decent barrel for the gun for hunting then try a new bergara barrel. The factory in spain was set-up under ed shillens supervision. They have really good accuracy and theyare reasonable. They can be smithed by anyone with the new bergara nut system. It works just like a savage nut system and can be home smithed if you know how to use headspace gages. Try Goodling rifles, you wont be sorry.
