Recommendation on .308 bullet weight for p-dogs

One of my bucket list things is a prairie dog shoot so I have a trip planned for late June in western Nebraska. I plan on bringing a .223 and a .243 but for the heck of it thought I'd bring my heavy barrel .308. I've used it in a couple F class matches and normally load 175 gr bullets but want to use a much lighter bullet for dogs. Thinking on using 110 or 125 gr. Will this weight work or should I go a little bit heavier?

Well, why not? You should be able to push 125 grain bullet to around 3200 fps or so. Since you are already taking a .223 and a .243 along why leave the .308 at home? Have some fun with it too. Since your .308 has a bit of weight to it you should be able to see your over 300 yard hits too I would think.

You did not mention what kind of glass you have but if you got at least a 3-9X scope on the gun you should be fine out to 400 yard or bit more. Good practice too.

I say go for it. I would.

If you've used the gun for 'F' matches, you likely have a great scope on it already. Yes, the lighter, super frangible bullets would be worth a try. I don't know if they are would be less than ideal with your rifling, still worth trying.

I'm sure there are V-Maxes, then similar from the other companies. For the higher round count I would set up with the 223, and then some with the 243.

Dang Greg, I shot two boxes of those trying to get a load for coyotes in a Savage scout and never could get under moa reliably with every powder known to man. Did get 125 gr. NBT's to print 5 shot 5/8" just about every time I took it out. Group starts to open up around 2900 on that bullet.

110 gr Varmageddon's shot numerous 4 shot groups touching but always threw one flier opening group to around an inch. May revisit that load as the rifle has a heavy trigger and I'm getting refamiliarized with the bolt gun again after using an AR for years so I may be responsible for the fliers.

I shot hundreds of them in a 600 Remington, an XP 100, and my American 30. In the Remingtons I used 3031 . I believe it was RL 7 in the A-30.

The 110gr Vmax is an excellent bullet for this. I've shot them at 3800+ fps out of my 300WM at the dogs and they vaporize. Just worked up a load with my buddy's 20 inch 308 at 3300fps…great accuracy. I've also used the 125gr Nosler BT out of the 300WM, worked pretty well too.

Hmmmm Didn't try Reloader 7 and have two cans on the shelf. One is Hercules. May have to revisit the Speers as I think the NBT's are harder (hunting) bullets and the speers would perform better on coyotes. Have yet to get a coyote w/the NBT's.

I use the 110 vmax's on the Rem. 22" long, 11-27 twist . with Alliant reloader 10x powder . ( 43.7 grain ) 3100 fps . they constantly print under moa .
. Only drawback on 110 vmax ( .30 short flat-base ) . The BC starts to really suffer when moving past the 300 yrd.range . but they consistent on the Holdover's and are explosive on the impacts.

LOL. Yes.

In my experience, the action with a 243AI throwing 87 VMAX at 3300 fps or 105gr AMAX at 3250fps is much more exciting that the 300WM launching 110gr VMAX at 3800fps. I believe the answer is in the twist rate - the little gun has a lot more RPMs going for it and generates the red mist. But the 110gr VMAX is still an incredible varmint bullet out of the 30s.
