Recommendations 22 LR Pistol To carry

The Ruger is a great pistol, very reliable, very accurate, and cheap. True, for 3 times the cost you can buy a better match pistol, but not much better.

Unless you are competing in the Master class, the Ruger will serve you well.

I am very pleased with my S&W Model 63 Kit Gun that I have owned since 1967.... Today you can buy a very close clone from Taurus... Used Kit guns are also available. The Colt Diamondback can still be found... And, finally, I am very happy with my Ruger 22/45 in the 4" bull barrel.

Ruger Single Six. Great accurate revolver, and with the extra 22Mag cylinder you can hunt fox and maybe a bobcat if you wanted that challenge. Mine almost always goes hunting fishing and camping with me.

I've got a Ruger Mk II with the 5.5'' bull barrel. When I lived in Logan, Utah I used to compete in the indoor .22 pistol shoots there. Those pistols will stand up to any of the fancy ones costing 3-4 times as much. And many times proved to be more reliable.

If I was going to carry it around all day though, I might go for the standard barrel.

I 've shot the Ruger MkII and they shoot nice, but the triggers are a little gritty. You can buy aftermarket kits for them and stone them though. For a nicer out of the box trigger go with the buckmark. Shoots just a well with a nicer trigger and is much easier to take down. With the MKII you either get them back together or you don't. A lot of guys take them down to clean them and end up paying the gunsmith $40 to put it back together. The High Standards are great pistols, but pricey to carry in the woods, samething with most of the Colts and the S&W 41. I haven't heard anything good about the Berreta Neos and the SIG Trailsides you have to be carefull when you clean. They have a special graphite lube and if you remove it and only oil it they may not function well.

For easy cleaning and reliablity I would go with a revolver. I had a Ruger Single Six which I traded on a S&W 617 and have never regretted it. The single 6 is nice to shoot mags and lr, but neither hit the same and you don't get very good groups with the lr because the bore is sized for the .224 of the mags and not the smaller diameter of the lr. The triggers are okay, the are easy to take apart to polish up and you can get spring kits which help a lot. My 617 will shoot 3/4 groups at 25yds off a rest. Mine had a very smooth but heavy trigger. My wifes is darn close to being target quality. The weight can be remedied though with a spring kit and it is actually now not much heavier than my High Standard Victor. I would go with a used 617 so you get the case hardened trigger and hammer and they are usually lighter triggers and smoother since the lawyers didn't have as much say.

Get a hold of a Crimson Trace catalog, and buy a .22 handgun that You can get a Lasergrip sight for even if You have to sell one of your other guns to pay the $250 or so for the grip. Dry fireing in the house will greatly improve trigger control. The dot shows you where the bullet would have went. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif I have a S&W 317 Kit Gun that fits in a pocket, and I have never missed a grouse or rabbit out to 25yds. The Lasergrip is the only laser sight that I know of that holds it's 0 and is bright enough to use in broad day light. You din't have to look at the sights so you can use both hands, and rest them on anythin solid. The little 10oz S$W will out shoot any heavy target pistole in the field. The laser grip on a ruger MK II make you feel guilty every time you kill something. It is too easy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

KSAR15, If looking for an auto, I would suggest the Ruger 22/45. It is styled after the 1911. I have one an am really happy with it. If you re looking for a revolver, the Single six is a good one two.

mkII/III or a buckmark. they are both good guns.
both of them are equivelent accuracy wise. it all comes down to personal preference.

The mkII is nice because it disassembled with out any tools whatsoever.

I have both and would be really hard to decide which one I like better.

go check them both out and see which one feels better for you.

I'm happy with my Ruger Mark II with the heavy barrel. It's main job is to discourage squirrels from raiding our bird feeders. Don't usually have too many repeat offenders.

For those of you unfamiliar with Crimson Trace laser grips;

mkII_001.jpg

They install like a regular set of grips, with an activating "bump" that your natural grip will activate, sending a bright laser down range like this

this is the laser on our closet door in full light.

If you ever wanted to practice hitting in complete darkness? laser is great.

Ever wanted to chase golf balls at 25 yards from the hip?
laser is great.

Mine were under $200 and I love 'em!

If you want something real light, try a Mountain Eagle. I think it was originally made by Ramline. It weighs hardly anything because it is almost all plastic. It actually shoots pretty good as far as my very limited pistol experience can tell.

My brother is a machinist, and when weapons lasers first got popular he made me a mount to hang a laser under the barrel of my MKII. There has never been a deadlier combination for coon hunting.

As you can see, alot of the guys on here have the Ruger Mk II's. I have the Competition model and it has out shot a scoped 22 rifle at 100 yards. The Smith is good, but I like the Trigger on the Ruger semi auto for hunting Jacks here in Nevada. JOHN

I have owned or used Ruger MkII 6 7/8 barrel, Ruger MkII 4 barrel, Ruger New Model Single six, Ruger Old model Single six, S&W Model 18 Combat Masterpiece, Taurus (don't remember the model, but it was J frame sized with a 4" barrel, a couple of Berretta's (the old 193? model will out-shoot almost all the rest), an Iver Johnson Sealed Nine, and a Hammerli Trailslide; that I can remember now. All work beautifully, In auto's the Hammerli seems a LITTLE more accurate than the Ruger's. I love the Ruger revolvers (even the SP101 4" and the SP101 2" that I forgot I once owned). Today I carry an Old Model single Six flatgate, because my kids have "temporary" custody of the Smith 18.
AAAHHHHH, life is good!
