Red Dot Scope at Night?

Anyone have a red dot scope mounted on their scattergun and use it for night time hunting? I was wondering how well they might work? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

It was hard to see the red dot because of the red lens I used at night. I was using an Ultra-Lite optic on my AR. I changed and went to a 3-9X50 scope.

I sometimes use a tasco pro point. I love it but have not shot it under a red light. I would think that if you'd turn it up some it would work fine though. They get pretty bright.

It sure helps you keep your head down on the shot.

One thing I'm pretty sure about though is to use one with zero magnification. It helps with keeping both eyes open which is certainly what you will want to do at night.

Beagler,
I use one on my 12ga. It works a bunch better than the factory Rem sight. I scan with a red light but have a Gander Mtn scope light mounted under the barrel for shooting. I took the red lens out of the scope light. The combo works great.

tim I think that he means a red dot for sighting purposes like a scope.
beagler yes the are great on a shotgun I have one on a mossberg 500 and one on a beretta a391 semi. make sure you tighten the screws tight and I mean tight because is seems that they like to work lose. I have a simmons reddot on both and love em for anything from turkeys to squirrels and foxs. don't worry about no being able to see the dot against the red light. just line up the three dots and pull the trigger.

Beagler,

We also thought that would be a good idea. My hunting partner put one on his shotgun, sighted it in and promptly went out the next night and missed a nice red fox at 35yds. Claims( right!) he couldn't see the red dot against the red fox against the red light. Well I picked up his gun and had to agree that indeed it was tough to see that red dot against the red light. I also noticed that if you turned up the intensity on the dot my eye would adjust to that intensity and then I couldn't see anything in the scope but the light. He has since replaced the red dot with a 2.5X scope. He missed the next fox also. Catt

Thats what I mean. I have a Tasco Red Dot on my shotgun. I took the red lens out of the scope light so I have no problem with the red dot blending in. My factory sight was not adjustable and realy sucked. The red dot scope with a clear lens gun light works great. I still scan with a red lens spot light.

Beagler,

Can you use a laser in PA? We tried several sighting options and believe me nothing beats a laser at night. You just point click and shoot. Don't even have to put the gun to your shoulder. They work much better on a shotgun than a rifle in my opinion because you don't have to deal with trajectory and hitting a pop can is close enough. I got mine from laserlyte, cost 87 bucks. SOR

ive used a mini mag light taped and shimmed under a shotgun barrel with the red lense thing on it and as long as you have time to foucous the beam down tight and adjust it before hand, as soon as the light gets on them it is about the same size as the pattern to 30 or 40 yards with #2 buck through a full choke
