Red dot vs. Magnified Scope?

I hunt with an AR15 in the deserts. Currently, I have a 3.5 power ACOG on this rifle.

Most of my shots on a coyote are within 100 yards. Many times I am responding to a coyote on the run within 50 yards.

Does anyone use a good red dot scope under similar circumstances?

I am thinking I might be better off with a 1x Aimpoint. It would be faster. It would be easier to find the coyote amongst the clutter of bushes to get a sight picture.

Has anyone tried a red dot scope and then gone back to a magnified optic? Why?

Never used a red dot myself.

I just went with a 1.5-5x20 vx3. It seems popular for calling along with many other very lower power optics. Check it out.

EOTech. The dot is tiny, you should have no problems out to 150+ yards on a coyote/bobcat size target.
The only Aimpoint I've used is on my buddy's Ruger Mk.II, and he's got a 3 or 4 MOA dot. That didn't seem easy to use at longer ranges compared to my EOTech.

I switch back and forth between the EOTech and my Monarch 4-12, depending on the terrain. Shooting at 50 - 100 yards on running game, I'd much prefer to have the EOTech. A 300 yard hung-up dog, the scope has an advantage.

GJJ,
I use a NorthStar holo sight on my RRA A4 and really like the quick target aquisition...especially for running shots.

I've switched off to my Nikon 3x9, during the spring months, for shooting groundhogs past 100 yards. However, I've missed more coyotes with a scope (on my A4) than I have with the holo sight.

Now, I leave the holo sight on the A4 and use the Nikon on my Stevens .25-06.

This I feel is the best of both worlds.I have a eotech w/a4x magnifier but the dot is not near as clear as my Docter site.A little spendy but works awesome. If you are shooting at 100yrds buy the 3.5 overlap (MOA)Can be mounted on your ACOG or just about any thing you want to mount it on.Pistol shotgun Rifle. It is truly awesome.

The reason for asking is that I have found magnification to be a blessing and a curse.

Magnification has helped me get a good sight picture in low light and situations where the coyote is blending in well or covered in part by brush.

Magnification has cost me coyotes when I can't find them in the scope. This seems to happen at close distance when they are moving. It can also be a problem in the desert where there is so much "clutter" of sagebrush.

That's why I like that EOTech so much. Since you shoot both-eyes-open and there's no mag, you can keep your eyes on the target and just "steer" the dot onto it.
A bobcat's hard enough to see in the first place, and making that transiton to a scope can break the deal.

I have a LaRue mount and was switching back and forth between the EoTech and a big Leupold until I finally decide the EoTech was really my cup of tea. It sits on a R-15 CS.

EL is spot on with his accessment, imho.

EOTtech.......tough, dependable, accurate, unlimited field of view.....Just wish they had 30 moa circle instead of 65 moa. I'm killing coyotes not people....
