I wanted to know if anyone has had a red fox come to a grey fox pup destress call?I went out calling last knight around 9:30 pm and started with a rodnet destress call.I saw red eyes after about 3 min. in the thicket (where a red fox den is located)it looked like the fox went in a hole.
well I let the call play adout 12 min. total.
then I changed the tape to a grey fox pup, thinking
the red went in its den mabe a grey would come.about 3 to 4 min. into the call i looked to my left about 35 to 40 yard was a fox coming in at an angle to me.when i saw the fox stopped
so I took the shoot with a 12 ga. # 6 high power
and rolled the fox across the pasture.(not a good load for fox mabey?)that was the last I saw of him.I was using a red light so its hard to see good but Im sure it was a red becuase the hole body of the fox looked orange in the red light.
whats a good shot gun load for fox? I guess Id
better buy me a good rifle you think.

Just go to bigger shot than # 6 , use # 4 or BB and that will solve your problem of foxs getting up and running off most of the time.

Hevi-shot now makes a load in B. My partner busted a grey at 60 yards with it last week. I have heard that it works well for coyotes out to 50 yards too.

Ricky,
I prefer the Remington 870 Super Mag 12 guage 3 1/2" mag. I've only had one fox take another step and its because I mad a bad shot. Awesome power. WOW!
Like bea 175 and Lungbuster said, go to #4's or BB but check your game laws for size.
I'm thinking of checking out the Heavy Shot also. Remingtons video on their website shows the Heavy Shot to be very impressive with down range knockdown punch and time after time there were more pellets in the kill zone. One demonstration had something like 170 more pellets in the kill zone compared to steel shot around 50 or 60 yds. They say you can use a smaller shot size since it penetrates better.
Good luck what ever you decide.

We're all on the same page, I use the 3 1/2" Remington as well. If you try #4 Hevi-shot you'll never look back. I've patterned mine out to 50 yards and it's amazing stuff. I use an improved cylinder and I get a tight enough pattern out to 50 yards!

I used hevi shot bb-2-4 on geese the past two seasons and have hammered birds stone dead out to 50+ yards. The load is devistating, im talking shotgun on tin can slammed. Should me amazing on fox. As for the rifle, i carry my 22-250 or 17 hmr depending on range, but if ur shooting under 50 yards consistenly, its not necessary.

I use #4 buck with a xtra full turkey choke. 3 1/2 mag. Just patterned it today. 6-8 pellets in the x ring at 50yrs. With those bigger pellets , all you need is one to hit em. Those are alos big enough to break bones on coyotes. Here in NY you can use any kind of load/calliber so long as deer season is over.

I had a red run full speed to the foxpro that was playing the grey fox pup this year. He came out of the brush and ran about ten feet in front of me right to the caller and since i had a 22 mag and couldn't get a shot i moved my arm to scare him away so i didn't end up with teeth marks on my foxpro that i had sitting on the ground.

I have the red fox pup and gray fox pup #2 on my foxpro and haven't had any luck with them yet. Has anybody had much luck with these or which one of these work better for either type of fox. My gray fox pup sounds like an echo and the sound starts and stops. The red pup sound really good. Thanks for any advice.

I heard about the gray fox pup call on PREDATORMASTERS (cant remember by who)
and went out and bought one. When i played it well it sounded like you described.I went out and tried
the call with no luck the first time.
the secound time I tried it was at 4:30 pm
after about 4 TO 6 min. a graf came out of the pines on the power line running to me.When he
stopped at about 30 yard I shot him, 4 times
and he still ran off but I caught this one.
them #6 are not good on foxes.keep trying
they will come.
